Question about Dishwashers

5 Answers

I have a SMEG slimline dishwasher (about 5 years old). When I try to run a cycle, it makes all the right noises, except the sprinkler/jets dont come on and no water comes out of them. I can hear the water being pulled into the system but it doesnt kick in to actually start a wash cycle. Any ideas?

Thank you, Dipu007, thats a useful start.

I have checked everything working from the sink back towatrds the dishwasher. What I have doesn't exactly match what you describe but let me explain.

Just below the kitchen sink, above the Ubend, I have 2 plastic hose type swivel connectors where the plastic hoses from the dishwasher connect. I have tightened both plastic connectors (by hand) and then opened them both to check they are clear. They are clear. There is no valve as such.

Then, there is a small tap. I am guessing this is the water in/not tap. I closed this tight. Just below the tap, there is a metal hose type swivel connector. This connects another plastic hose to the tap and beyond. I unscrewed this connector and there is a small filter inside. (there is also an electric box on this hose, like a pump or something). The filter was clean, but there was a lot of water in this pipe which wasnt coming through. I reconnected it and turned the tap again.

This is the bit that doesn't follow what you've described. At the point where the hose enters the dishwasher I'm not sure what's going on. There is no visible connector. I gave it a tug and there is some give in it so maybe it is springloaded. Anyway, there isn't another garden hose adapter and no strainer to check.

The dishwasher still isnt getting water (at least nothing spins/ sprinkles).

So, I guess that leads us to the electric solenoid valve inside the base of the dishwasher. How do I approach this to check if it is working or not?

Thanks for your help so far

The valve is inside the machine and it is called inlet Valve.

On all filling problem test the water level switch, the one actuated by a floater sensor.
Ensure the floater is not stuck in up position, and that the switch is working.

If there is no water at all getting inside the machine, then your machine has probably a defective inlet valve. The valve must be tested and eventually replaced.

If there is water getting into the machine, but it is not spraying, then there is need to test and eventually replace the impeller pump, that pumps water on the spray arms.

Also control board must be tested, as that can cause any kind of problem.

Some of the test are complicate, some test for impeller and inlet valve for example require energizing the unit directly, and reading voltages inside the machine using a multimeter on live AC power, those kinds of tests should not be done by the home user.

Basically, if water is getting inside the machine but not spraying, check the impeller pump, that is first suspect.

Always unplug power cord or trip circuit breaker before working on your appliance.

Regards.

Hi,
Check the float switch inside the tub, it should move freely up and down.

Check the drain line it will be clogged . clean it .

I guess its like the drain pump is defective.
Disconnect the drain hose under the sink & place it in a bucket, start the dishwasher in a drain cycle.
If no water drains out, you will need to replace the drain pump.

You'll have to first ensure that the valve is open where the supply gets its water from the sink supply, and water is getting to the dishwasher. There is a garden hose type swivel adapter after the valve, right? Close the valve tightly- even if it scrapes the wood - and then unscrew that hose coupling and see if the hose is full of water. Look there for a strainer inside the hose that is clogged. Clean it. If that is good, reconnect and ensure it's tight.Open the valve. Now check the dishwasher to see if it's getting water. Then at the point where the hose enters the dishwasher is a spring loaded hose ring coupling, right? If not, and there's another garden hose adapter, remove that (after turning off the water again)and see if there's a strainer there. If water is supplied to the dishwasher okay, then it is probably the electric solenoid valve inside the base of the dishwasher.

I have a very similar dishwasher, with a very similar problem. I fixed it by removing debris from the water evacuator pump located towards the front of the bottom of the machine (the last motor before the drain hose. In my case, grape stems had clogged it up. Once emptied, it purrs once again. NOTE: don't disassemble the motor, just flush it out, there is an o-ring gasket that is a bear to re-install.

if water is coming in the drain then you could have a bad check valve. when you open the dw at the end and there was no water it was because you were in the drying cycle and the eement was drying the water as it came in.

very possible that it is indeed something stuck in the chopper assemble, remove the lower wash arm, from ther youll remove 4-5 torx15- screws and then under there you find another torx 15 screw , after removng the screw you can pry up hte cover form the right side and reveal the chopper assembly, i would refrain form removing the chopper if at all possible, its kinda a pain in the rear to put back in, buit you can cean any junk out if ness.

Mine eventually "fixed itself". I think some debris got caught and eventually (5 cycles or so) got ground up and sent through the drain. The noise changed each time it got closer "flushing out"
