Lcd back light ptoblem

Hi to all gurus out there!
Mine is an acer aspire 5102 WLMI(~ACER 5100).
Last night when I was watching a movie on my lappy the screen suddenly blacked out. When i turned down the volume, I heard a little hum and i tried turning off /on my display, it succeded for the 1st time but after some 10 min I heard the voice again and this time its completely gone! I googled reg this issue and found the possible causes wud be the inverter / back light (CCFL). I replaced them both but 'd no luck at all! i figured it out that the problem 's not either of these two but the inverter is not getting power supply.I changed the ribbon cable but again no use :(.I cud get the diaply well n good if i connect to an external monitor!also i do get power from the mother board to the inverter (19v and 2.5v) i guess 2.5 V is the control voltage to inc/dec the lcd brightness. But I dont get any voltage to the IC on the inverter.is that a problem eith the fuse on the inverter?

Hello I have the same problem, I tested the voltages with the multimeter and got the same results as you, 19 volts from two pins, and from 0.9v to 3.9v in another pin (brightness), and in the other one I got 0.35v (if the Blight is off) and 3.9v (if the BLight is on) are those correct readings?. I Jumped the fuse from the inverter (A complete noobie error) and my machine turned off (I tried this like 3 times, Another dumb error), The machine still works fine after taking the battery out and putting it back in, but my real question is, with those readings from my DMM am I safe to buy a new inverter and will it work?, are those the same readings as you guys? I haven't checked the MoBo's fuse, but for what happend I assume that the fuse still works, or, my machine does not have a internal fuse because if the fuse was burnt out, the machine woudn't have turned off because the connection was open, right? please tell me if I'm right or wrong. thanks a lot for your help beforehand.

Could be a problem with the mainboard, or the tube in the screen, or you recieved a dead lcd inverter.
If your not getting voltage to the inverter, but you can see a picture correctly on an external monitor, you may have a bad cable, or mainboard.
Check all fuses near where the lcd cable connects to the mainboard (you may need to look on the reverse (underneath side) of the board.

On one acer I'm currently working on,(that had a smashed screen, I installed a replacement screen, and had the same issue. So I replaced the inverter - same. I tried a good test tube on the inverter - nothing. I then disassembled the notebook and removed the mainboard. On the opposite site to the lcd connector I found a fuse labelled F2 (near a larger fuse labeled F1). This has shorted out.

I would test this before assuming the new inverter is dead.
I suspect that by replacing that you will get power to the inverter.

Unfortunately I dont know the rating of the fuse, however. I presume 12v but no idea on amp rating

Good luck

Ah, correction, thats 19Volt, not 12.

If the fuse is dead, you could try jumping it with a bit of wire, but if there is another short you may kill the mainboard.

I just jumped the fuse and confirmed the unit now works, I just have to get a replacement fuse now.

Can the Acer Aspire 5102 WLMi handle more than 2GB of RAM? The specifications say up to 2GB.

It handles up to 2 x 2GB soDIMM modules. However, available memory will vary with operating systems; Windows 32bit supports 2GB max. for Applications out of the box and can be tweaked to 3GB.
You'll need a 64bit operating system to use more of the installed memory.
