I have a similar problem as i to receive the E74 error on my tv screen but when i take out my AV cable and turn on my xbox 360 and the single red light in the lower left quadrant of the ring vanishes as if it never was there. My question is do i need to get a new AV cord or a new xbox 360 entirely?

red light appears in lower left quadrant of ring, error message E74 appears on screen. called technical suppport, was advised to send it in. removed hard drive, no help

could the rpoblem be an av cable

  • Anonymous May 25, 2009

Started with the graphics during game play, I was getting a non fulled in background and blank spots in dark areas of the game screen. Whne I exited the game everything looked normal except my avatar which had the same issue as the game screen. I shut down and restarted. the "X" globe was all messed up like the game screen. I reset the graphics settings and then the ring lit up red on the lower right tile and a E74 error was on screen. "Contact Support". So what gives? This system has never given me a problem before. I even ran a extra set of fans on it to prevent over heating.

The only sulition I find is "send it in"

I was playing my 360 yesterday and it was working just fine but later when i was going to bed i tried putting lord of the rings in to watch then i get 1 red light on my xbox and my power supply has a green light so does that mean i have to add new heatsink or fans inside my 360? I've gotten this error with the same 360 before but usually i'd just restart it and it would be working just fine.

Hi,

There is high chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip near the AV cable connection).

It could also be caused by a faulty AV cable so check that first.

In some cases it is a problem with the GPU and may be repairable by doing the x-clamp replacement. If your warrenty is still on, ask the store you bought it from about the error.

Get a HANA chip heatsink. You can find them on ebay. If that doesn't help your chip may have an open circuit caused by overheating.

Ok I do have a temp solution to help but not a permant fix i have read all of the fixes but sorry this is a kind of a way for it not to go into the ring of death so much for the 3 year warrantee have you noticed that its only 08/09 models mabee with the hdmi output
to tell its a gpu problem (do this at your own risk) I do it all the time to see what i have to fix
lets start
1.turn off your box at the wall
2. see the two fans at the back place 2 long long matches (wood) or anything else to stop them spinning
3. turn on box and wait till 2 lights come on usually 5 to 10 minutes
4. when the 2 lights come on switch off at the wall and let cool for an hour
5.remove the sticks and turn on
if it comes on then you have a GPU problem M$ is the only way to fix it properly
clamps and wet towels and artic silver only waste your time so part with money wisely if your going to spend money ask them for a 12 warrantee or a moneyback guarrantee and watch them buckle

Be aware that MS will not repaird the e74 for free (even though they should - it's becomming almost as common a faul as the 3 lights!).

I've got it, I fixed it with a heat gun for a few days then it went completely.

Xbox is now in bin and i'm £300 down.

Screen reads, system error and has a trouble code of E 74 What could be the problem?

The Xbox 360 e74 error is a rather common problem on Xbox consoles, with similar roots to the now infamous red ring of death problem.
The e74 issue is actually caused by a problem with the scaler (ANA or HANA) chips located next to the graphics processor inside your Xbox 360.
It is believed that the error with the scaler video chip which causes the e74 error on your Xbox 360 is caused by overheating. This is also the cause of other errors such as the no video problem, as well as red lights in the power ring of an Xbox console.

To fix the Xbox 360 e74 code, there are a few steps you need to take-
1. Firstly, leave this article open, go to your Xbox 360 console and then remove the AV cable. Blow any dust out of it, then re-insert it snugly back into the console until a clicking is heard. Power on your console again and see if the problem has been fixed.
2. If that does not work, borrow another AV cable (get one off a friend or family member, or from your local video game rental shop) Try using this one in your Xbox 360.
3. If replacing the AV cable does not work, then you will have to repair the scaler chip and graphics processor inside your Xbox in order to fix the e74 problem. To do this, you will need an Xbox 360 repair guide, which will contain the video instruction files you need to be able to fix your console properly. You cannot fix the e74 yourself without one.
It is important to note that most Xbox repair guides focus on fixing the "red ring of death". However, the process for repairing the e74 will also be covered in the same guide as well, as it is extremely similar.

X box 360 showing error code e74

The e74 code is caused by one or more of the following:

Improper heat sinks and insufficient air circulation heat builds within Xbox 360's case.

The thermal glue that holds the video scaler (HANA/ANA) gets slightly out of place due to the increase in heat.

The e74 code is displayed as the scaler chip does not function properly and your Xbox 360 will not work.

I would recommend calling Microsoft's Techincal Support about this, maybe they can fix it. Their number is below.

My xbox 360 has frozen, and all it says is E74. How do I fix this?

Your machine has succumbed to the RROD RED RING OF DEATH error.

The Xbox 360 e74 is one of the many types of Xbox error codes that can affect your console at any given time. Thousands of Xbox 360 consoles worldwide are affected by these various errors, and one of the most common of them is the e74 Xbox error, which is currently affecting your console, as well as preventing you from gaming on it. Today you are going to learn what causes the Xbox e74 problem, as well as whether you can fix it yourself.

The e74 Xbox error's principal cause is overheating, due to excess heat causing damage to various components, and eventually major malfunctions in the hardware of your console. Why is this heat able to build up and cause damage that leads to the Xbox 360 e74 error? This is actually due to cramped case design and a lack of cooling devices such as fans and heat sinks. Although overheating is ususally a problem for all electronic devices, the Xbox 360 does seem to suffer particularly badly from this issue.

Although you could fix your Xbox e74 problem by sending your Xbox 360 back to Microsoft for repair, the best method you can actually employ is to fix your Xbox yourself.
Here's why-
* You will be without an Xbox 360 console for at least a couple of weeks if you send your console away for repair. Why put up with this when you can fix the Xbox 360 e74 issue yourself in a matter of hours?
* If your warranty has expired then you will have to pay to have your console repaired, and although there is a cost involved in purchasing the necessary items for Xbox repair, you will still save around $100 by carrying out the repairs yourself.

If you want to fix the Xbox e74 error yourself, then you will need to invest in a video repair guide. These come in digital download format, and can be purchased online for a reasonable price (you won't need to spend anything over $30) You really need to buy one if you want to fix your Xbox 360, as written instructions just aren't detailed enough.

To ensure that you get the best deal, purchase one that covers ALL Xbox error codes (many only offer information about the "red ring of death", so you need to carefully read the sales page to ensure that it teaches you how to fix any type of Xbox error) Look also for a money-back guarantee, free customer support and free video samples to that you can check the quality of the product.

Some have used damp towels to bring the temp down - but ultimately, the proper repair entails disassembly of the xbox - down to the processor - removing the old hard thermal paste compund, adding new thermal paste, and re-assembling.

There are MANY guides and videos you can search google for to crack open your 360 case if you are up to the challenge.
