Your boot sequence is changed, put the hard disk to first boot in setup menu, or the hard disk gone bad.

My son pressed some keys on the laptop which had switched the screen landscape, I can't get it back to portrait and have tried fn + F5 and several other keys! Any ideas on how to get it back to normal?

For a Tablet PC with INTEL graphics adapter, the default sequences to rotate the screen are CTRL ALT and Arrows. UpArrow for Primary Landscape. Try CTRL ALT UpArrow, CTRL ALT DownArrow, CTRL ALT LeftArrow, or CTRL ALT RightArrow.
Read the user manual of your computer to find out how to enable the Rotation Utility.
And please, when you ask a question give the make and model number of your computer.

first make sure there on no disks in the drives cd usb floppy

Test your PSU or replace it if your power supply units fan is not working your PSU is faulty

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

What type of HDD is this? IDE; SATA; or SATA II? The problem probably is that you are trying to use a SATA drive with a SATA II board. They are not backwards compatible. Hope this helps.
