My laptop does not excess the internet.. there is no wireless adapter for my IBM Think Pad T42.. what suitable network driver could i Download?

The same model ThinkPadcan have different types of network, video and audio drivers and unless youknow exactly which one is installed in your ThinkPad, you need to download allthe drivers and install each driver until you find the right driver.
The most likely wireless card will be the Intel wireless.
When you download thedrivers, write down the device driver and it's file name so you have a recordof which driver you are installing and which directory the unzipped files arelocated on your hard drive. Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEBsite - support/download page and download the latest Windows device drivers foryour model computer, Use this link: - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FbrowseByProductLandingPage.vm&sitestyle=lenovo&brandind=10&validate=true

We can't find the on/off radio switch on our IBM Thinkpad.

Your T21 may not have a wireless card installed. To check if a wireless card is installed click on Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager and click on Network Adapters. If you see a wireless card in this list and it has a yellow ? against it then the wireless card driver was not installed.

The T21 does not have a wireless switch, if the wireless card driver is installed then it automatically is switched on.
