It sounds like the suspension spring has broken inside the compressor so when it shuts off it rattles against the case. If the refrigerator is still operating normally I would recommend not repairing it. It could run for years like this without any further problems and a compressor change would be very costly.

My fridge knocks when running

Your fridge's compressor motor is suspended inside the compressor housing on three or four springs. These springs are designed to hold the motor load in a vertical position. Transporting a fridge on it's side can stretch or break these springs which can cause a shudder stop condition (the fridge makes a shuddering banging noise everytime the compressor stops and sometimes when it starts).

It's a good idea to let a fridge sit for a bit anytime it is moved. Over night won't hurt but an 8-10 hours is more than enough time some say less.

the internet consensus seems to be that you should limit the amount of time the unit is not upright. And as stated above, leave it upright at least overnight before starting it. Apparently damage can arise from mixing of lubricant and coolant, so damage is more likely in an older unit with worn seals.

The fridge does not get cold

does the compressor run? If so, does it make a happy bubbly sound ? Does the door seal? Does the fan between the freezer and fridge work? If the compressor shudders when it turns off, the compressor is possibly shot. if there is dust in the grill on the back, or if it's too close to the back wall, it doesn't help. also, some fridges use the grill under the front for fresh air; so, clean all dust away from working surfaces. make sure food isn't stacked in font of the cold air vent in the fridge/freezer.

We have an 11 year old fisher-paykel fridge .For past 6 months several times a day it makes a loud knocking noise

If this noise happens when the compressor turns on and shuts off it is called a compressor knock. All the internal workings of the compressor are supported by springs, over time the springs wear out and become weak. When the compressor stops or starts the tourq causes the internal parts to hit aginst the casing of the compressor. Sounds like a clunk clunk clunk noise. If you can deal with the noise do not go out and replace the compressor cause it will work just fine like that.

My fridge has become increasingly more noisy when the compressor kicks in. Any thoughts on why and how to fix this?

The only way to eradicate the noise, is to replace compressor. Some make shuddering noises on start up and some on switch off. Basically, in the compressor dome are 4 rubbers equally placed holding the internal motor. If one of those rubbers disslodge, then the noise starts.

My one year old whirlpool shudders when it goes

Shuddering (cool word) happens when one of the motor support springs inside the compressor , either breaks , comes loose , or never connected . I would suggest having the compressor replaced while still in warrenty , where there should be no cost to you , except for MAYBE a service call . Usually , 5 yr warrenty on the compressor and sealed system (no cost to you for parts and labor ) . Compressor knocking when cycling off is a creditable compressor replacement cause .

Appliance gives loud shudder periodically

The compressor rides on springs inside the compressor housing. Sometimes it can jump when it cuts on or off, no big deal.
