sounds like the same problem i was haveing i was playing cod waw and i got little white dots all over the screen and i turned it off then back on and i had rrod it could be the a/v cord or its the A.N.E chip if its the chip your screwed cuz its unreplaceible you will need a new xbox if you get 3 red lights you can send it to m.s. good luck!!
It is possible that its a bad av cable, however if you are getting rrod, there is an internal hardware problem. If you are still in warranty, call microsoft and get it sent in asap, if you are out of warranty then go pick up a new system. If you have a pro or elite system, you can just reuse your hard drive. So you can buy an arcade version(which will likely have newest mother board JASPER) and just put your hard drive assembly on it. There should be instructions on how to remove the side panel/hard drive on microsofts xbox support page.
The machine is overheating and the graphics chip on the main board is acting up cause of it. Make sure there is no dust or dirt blocking the air vents that would cause the system to heat up more then normal.
If that doesn't do it then maybe think about getting a cooler for the system, here is a website that talks about a few of them. Click here.
If that doesn't help then your mainboard is going bad and would need to be replaced.
