Argggg!

Not good. Are you sure the smell is originating from the drive and not the power supply? If you remove the drive can you smell the odor from it?

If you do then chances are one of the components is shorted. This is not good at all. If your data is REALLY important to you you can purchase a similar drive and exchange the drive circuit board! This is probably the ONLY way you may be able to access your data.

Disconnect the drive totally and restart your system. Do you still smell the odor from your system? It may be the power supply?

There is also silicone paste that goes between the CPU and fan. In time that silicone can bake and cake in to hard lumps... so it MAY be the CPU you are smelling?

Will your system boot with a different hard drive connected?

Again, you give us so little information!

Good luck!

Light flashing, HDD will not load, burning smell, not working please tell me my data has not been lost

being an external hard drive did the burning smell come from the connected computer or your external hard drive

open up the connected computer check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and possibly overheat

I have just bought 2.5 inch toshiba external hard drive for my lap top and it is not working

you've probably popped it smell the connections for the smell of burning, check the fuse in the plug should be 5Amp,
there easy to blow, if you don't get the USB plugged in the right way first time it sparks & shorts the ports out on the computer & if you've got the hard drive plugged in & switched on before you plug the USB in then it shorts the drive out as well.
take it back to the shop & tell them two replace it.if they won't then open the unit & take out the drive because that will still work & sell it on e-bay or put it in a desktop pc.

UPGRADE DRIVER FOR MAXTOR 3100 EXT HARD DRIVE

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked (with the computer and hard drive plugged in). I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Do I need only one cord (usb) to connect to my laptop?

The "physically-smaller" external hard-drives draw power through the USB cable.
The "physically-larger" external hard-drives require an external power-supply (just like a laptop requires an external power-supply).

Check the casing for a plug where the electrical power would come in; if none, then the unit will draw electrical power through the USB cable.

My pc dose not come up my maxtor basics external desktop hard drive

What OS are you using? Windows 98SE does not always recognize exterrnal hard drives. Try the external HD on a computer running Windows XP and see if that works. If it works on WinXP and not Win98SE or possibly WinME the External HD is good.
