I was working on my acer 5050 recently when it froze up, I turned it off, when i attempted to reboot it, i only get a message the says unable to locate operating system, then the comp shuts off, i assume this is a hard drive prob, but i would like a second opinion.

Re: Operating system not found
This means it cannot find the Windows OS files because either:- The hard disk has failed or it needs reseating. or the hard disk controller has failed. or the Windows files have been deleted or corrupted (maybe by virus)
Try reseating the hard drive. If the hard disk is faulty, you need a new one. Try using your recovery CD disk. Try re-installing Windows

Hey I have the same problem, may have found a solution to this problem although im not 100% positive but read My post here in a reply to the same exact problem. Keep in touch with Me on this and maybe we can find a permanent solution
you have no choice but to open it up, this is to check that the hard drive works or has disslodged, pull the hard drive out and then reseat it again, reboot the laptop and see if the bios has found the hard drive, if it does try to boot into it
If you dont see any green lights and you dont hear any boot up sounds ( hd, fans, etc) try to take out battery and just plug in the AC adapter to a known good power outlet. Make sure your power plug is good too. If you hear boot-up sounds, see green lights but no display then toggle on the "fn" key and or try on an external monitor.
You need to re-install The Drivers ( software to make the Device Work ) I,d suggest visiting Acers Driver Site. typing in the model number of your laptop. and searching for a Suitable Driver for CD/DVD Rom.
Operating system depending, you can right click on the device and try un-installing it. reboot the computer. and you should get a message new devive found. and give you the option to re-install the driver for it.
Unfortunately we cannot post links for you to Obtain these Drivers, But i,d look at global.Acer.com Support and Download.
