What is error code 76 on a Rheem tankless hot water heater that has propane connection?

Communication Fault with Remote Control. At a minimum check the following: 1. Check remote control wiring for loose or damaged connections. 2. Bypass remote control cable by connecting remote control directly to remote control terminals on PCB. Replace cable if found to be faulty. Yes Either the wiring or the remote control is at fault. To rule out the wiring, disconnect the remote control and use a short, good jumper wire and connect directly to the remote terminal on the PCB. If the unit works using the remote, then the wiring is at fault. If the unit does not work, then the remote is at fault. Did the unit go to main burner? No Replace the Printed Circuit Board Remove remote control wires from wiring terminal on the PCB. Plug unit in and open a hot water source.

I have c7 code

it is a communication problem between remote control and tankless unit

Temporary fix:
1 Turn off electricity to tankless and remove cover. Find two terminals that remote control connects to.
2 Disconnect remote control wiring. Turn electricity back ON.
3 Open hot water tap and see if unit works as expected.
4 Without remote, tankless will heat water to default 120 degrees F and will run without the remote.
Contact Rheem they may send you another pcb board.

Will my rheem tankless water heater work without the main remote hooked up

Yes.
Default temperature will be 120 degrees F
Of course the tankless still needs to be plugged into a wall outlet.

Remote is flashing C8 and 76, alternating. I turn the unit off, then back on, and I get hot water for about 10 seconds, then it goes cold and the same error message occurs. Unit is Rheem Main Remote...

Before calling service technician, open following links for Rheem tankless resources including error codes and Rheem chat.
Disconnect wires from remote to see if system stabilizes. Unit will heat to default temperature without remote.

Error codes are considered start-point for troubleshooting.
C8 76 can mean PC board failure.
76 can mean communication failure with remote control

Sorry Ken I worked for Rinnai Australia as a service manager so treat my advice with a little cuation but you should find the basic universal controller should work fine. The code over here is a MC-91 Q2A. It will MC-91 sometihing for over there (I'm guessing from the codes you use you are across the pacific!). You can wire this unit either back to the heater or to wiring from another controller, just match the colours and link them in. Power off the heater first but it is all low voltage.

Error code 12 can sometimes be caused by a short circuit on the low voltage side of the installation. Could possibly be a fault with the controller itself which is low voltage.

The tank less water heater-Riannai Model#MC-91-1US-S is bleeping with an error code of 12 when the hot water is turned on. I have checked the breaks but else can I do?

Correct me if I am wrong but you have and error code 12 immeadiately you turn the tap on.
If so you have a short circuit on the low voltage side of the system. Usually this is somewhere on the wiring to your remote control pads. Easy way to test is to turn the power off, that is unplug the power lead to the heater. Take the cover off the front of the heater. Locate where the leads that supply the controllers conect in to the heater. Older models this will be on the circuit board, newer ones right at the base of the casing. You need to disconnect this wring (not the main power supply lead). Once done put the case back on and give the heater a try. If the problem is gone you have a short circuit on the wiring to controllers or a fauly controller. If the fault remains you have a short circuit on the low voltage side inside the heater. Likely need a technican to find this but tell himto start with the wiring to the the overheat thermal fuse that goes around the heat exchanger casing.
