This happened to me but i'm not sure it will work for you.. try to put the actual switch into lock mode (push it firmly into lock mode) then slowly push it back to the unlock mode.. if it doesnt work the first time try it a couple of more times. it worked for me..

for me is same problem only my zen is 2gb software reinstalling wont fix it i dont know how fix it someone help. first tiime i saw this problem when i connect my player to 9V battery my zen restart and brightness set to 10% i set for 100% but brightness still left like 10% .try this push play bution and hold all time, then push reset bution and hold with play bution , and then turn on your zen Your zen now on on recovery mode pusg reload firmware and then reboot (simply system "play bution+reset+bution+on bution= recovery mode" ) note: disconect your zen from usb cable and ensure that your zen baterry is 50% or higer

After 3 1/2 hours, the battery went dead. I waited a couple of minutes, then plugged it into my computer to see if the battery would charge. It started charging. A few hours later I went back to check on it, and it showed a full battery. I disconnected it from my computer, and turned it on. It came on, but the screen just said "Low Battery". I then plugged it back into my computer, and the screen said "Rebuilding Library". I left it for about a 1/2 hour, and it was done. I unplugged it from my computer, turned it on, and it works now!! Hope this helps out everyone else who has the same problem.
Try another PC or another USB port
Make sure the hold/lock is not engaged
Check for firmware update on Creative's website
Get Recovery Tool from Creative
Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.

Step by step instructions for formatting a player
1. Detach the player from the PC if it is connected, and turn off the player.
2. Press and hold the Play button while powering on the player.
3. When the player displays the Creative logo, release the Play button
4. Select Format (All) and select Yes to format the player.
5. After the player has finished formatting, select Reboot.
6. Re-transfer the tracks to the player.

Hi! I think you should try this (i've already tried it and it works):
1- Unplug your Zen from your Computer.
2-Turn off your Zen (if you can't do it, press the "Reset" button)
3- BEFORE turning on your Zen, press your "Play" button and hold it while you turn on.
4-When a format menu appears, select the "Format All" option (you'll loose all your Zen data).
5-When the format menu reapears, select the "Reboot" option and listo!
You have your Zen as new and should not have problem. Good luck!
hello guys sorry to hear your problems i have same problems too. Ok first plug ur zen player (mines V PLUS.. heheh) to ur pc then hold play button then keep pressing the reset botton until it turns on RECOVERY MODE then select YES to all (clean up, format, reload firmware) then download the RECOVRY TOOLS at creative site install it then plug ur zen player and run the recovery tools (cross ur finger) hopes it works mine a big smile hehehe email me at email@example.com if it works..Gud Luck guys
