Could need repair of bad solder connections or a cleaning of the pot. With the receiver off turn the balance pot back and forth several times, this may be all you need to do. If it improves a couple drops of wd40 on the pot and a couple more turns should clean it up.

Is it possible to hook up my iPhone 5 to play music through this receiver (specifically Pandora)?

If you get a mini-headphone to rca cable then you should be able to hook the phone's headphone output to an rca input on the receiver and play through there.

Sony str-de185 left channel very scratchy and poor; not speaker, wire, or connections

Could be an open resistor in the amp for that channel. Might have to have a pro look at it.

What I can do to take off option "PROTECTED" from screen I have Audio / Video Control Center STR- DE185. thank for u help juliansalazar

'Protected' is a State, not an Option.

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

My Sony STR-DE185 is displaying "PROTECT". The manual says it is from a short circuit. Are there any known common problems with this unit related to short circuiting? Mike

If the speaker wires shorted together, it will trigger the protection circuit. If the output transistors/IC shorted out in the power amplifier section, it will also go into protection mode also.
Try disconnecting all the speaker wires to see if it will come on normal.
to have it fixed by the shop may not be worth it.

Sony STR-DE185 receiver powers up, but then goes into protect mode. what does protect mode mean and how can I get it off protect mode?

"Protect" is what it does when it senses a dangerous condition.

Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as a possible root cause for intermittent shutdown.

Str-gx800es sony receiver problem- right channel speaker sound is 'static', low and distorted. I have checked checked all speaker and output/input source cable connections with no luck. All left channel...

If you have checked the speakers and wiring, the right channel has a audio driver or output problem, which explains the low volume, static, and distortion. A service technician will be required to fix the receiver so it will balance the left side.

The tuner reads protect when volume is at 47 with no wires attached. Will go no higher than 29 with wires attached.

I'd say it has a mysterious internal problem that would require a hands-on tech to take a look.
