Question about Projection Televisions

3 Answers

My set keeps shutting off by itself. This seems to happen sporadically, meaning that I could be watching it for 15 minutes, or 2 hours, and it will shut off. At this point I cannot turn it back on, but usually if I wait a awhile I can then turn it on for a length of time. This has been happening since I moved the set to a different house. I am curious what to do, or what part in the set has gone bad...please advise? Thanks.

I have been advised by local technicians to let the set die completely before attempting to repair. This seems wrong, couldn't this create more component failures? Also, one suggestion was that possibly the set was staticly shocked while moving the set which potentially fried the power board? Any thoughts?

If it is overheating, what should be repaired, or replaced?

Hi, your power board has failed. this is the cause of the repeated power off/on. it will need to be rebuilt or replaced. it will cool of for a min then it is able to restart. this is a sign of over heating that is occurring in the power board. its blown.

The board has already met its maker so, i would replace/repair this first. you can do a test on the cooling assembly with a voltage meter to see if the fans are operational. if they are not working, you will have to replace them as well. this will fix the issue.

The dominate issue here is the power board failure. most defiantly.

replace the power board and, if necessary, replace the cooling assembly if needed. i would test the integrity of the cooling assembly before you replace it. it may be fine.

I've had a TV just like that, it was a projection TV too. I had to replace 3 fueses and 2 relays in the TV. It worked great after that. Hope this helps.

Thank you for using Fix Ya!

Have a great one!

Like antiochpc said it could be the Fans or even the Power Board.

It could be overheating; the fans may have stopped working. Or the power board could be failing.

Check the solder on the vertical output IC this is a common problem and can cause loss of video while sound remains and often will shut the set down with a vertical deflection error

you can do a self-diagnosis test by pressing the menu and input/device button on set for 5 sec and see what error code it gives you. Count the blinks followed by a short pause then more blinks. This is the error code.

Shutting off and on...

the problem may be due to dry soldering in the power supply stage if it was with the lamp there would be red or green light showing the presence of the power to the tv after making it own some of the components get hot and it will make the the soldering point conectionless and after some time the heat sink get cooled and the soldering point gets connected and u will see the picture again it is a simple problem if u have a soldering iron u make it hot and re solder all the components in the first part of the circuit board and the problem if rectified

Wavy Screen on Startup

I gather from your post that wavy can mean two possible things as the TV comes on, you see the picture flow like ocean waves? In this case you may have 60Hz hum modulating with the picture, this is actually unlikely these days, but I have heard it happens sometimes. The other thing it could be is light horizontal tearing. This happens when the horizontal frequency is too high or too low. You are not going to like my solution because I feel that for problems like this the set must be analyzed not just subjected to "shotgun troubleshooting", so here I go, Take the TV to a repair shop.
