You need a new timer. The cam (dial) is round with different cuts in it. When the cam advances, the keys, like a piano, will make contact with the cuts. If the dryer is not advancing, then the timer has gone bad. The contacts are staying closed keeping the switch of the dryer on. This is a VERY easy part to replace... No need to hire anyone. I can walk you through it.

There is a moisture sensor in the unit that tells the timer to advance. IT is not working. This could be a control board issue or bad connection.

If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heating the most common problem is that the ignitor goes bad. Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working properly.

Dryer Timer dial will not move but dryer works

Will the dryer move forward in timed dry? if it does not then you need a new timer. If if will advance in timed dry but does not advance in auto mode then the high limit needs to be replaced on the heater.

Kenmore dryer dial doesn't advance

That looks like a thermal shut off to protect the dryer if it overheats.

I am assuming that the timer never advances - even in timed mode (as opposed to some automatic drying setting).

Most likely you need to buy an inexpensive multimeter and start testing. There should be a schematic on the back of the dryer either on the outside or on the inside of the back panel.

Since timers on dryers are just mechanical devices that use a small motor (and yours is brand new), it looks like your timer is not getting power. The switch itself is mechanical, you should be able to rotate it to the different settings, press the start button and the dryer will work in the correct mode. Without electricity, the timer won't advance.

Check for loose or burned connections. Dryers use a lot of amperage so occasionally the wires can get burnt and corroded.
