You tell us that you already try to quote how much if they will going to change the parts and it is to much expensive right.
If that will going to be again i prefer to advice you that buy a new one instead of fixing your old one and not so sure if it will last long jsut in case they will fix.

Please use good quality video cleaning tape to clean video head.
Gray Bars across the screen shows that video head is dirty / clogged and requires cleaning.
Yes, you can post an image that should be less then 150k size. in JPG format.

Please let me know both DCR-TRV900 and DCR-HC85 giving same problem?
well I'm practical technician of Sony camcorders and replying you in this post.
technically we call it "drop out noise" and "Mosaic noise" and "bar noise" depending on symptoms.
I'm waiting an image of problem as you said in previous response to understand problem properly.
An image would be fine to understand what kind of bars in playback.
Please post an image here and file size should be up to 150k in JPG format.
Thanks.
OK, if camera is working fine then please click accept solution button and let it close.

Last time I did that, the Sony dealer said I needed a new 'motherboard' to the tune of $500. I went for it, since that camera cost $5000. The fix worked for a short time, then the colored stripes came back and audio stopped working. With camera prices under $500 nowadays, fixing isn't really a very good option. Can you tell by this symptom what is causing the problem?
The horizontal bars on not gray, they are color. Is there some way to post a photo of the display on this site so you experts can see it?
Can a technitian tell what the problem is by viewing the colored horizontal bars on the camera LCD?
Hello, I've had the same problem with 2 Sony DV cams... TRV 900 and newer HC85. After a couple years of use, the video display and the output to my computer have colored bars across the screen and audio stops working. The moving video can be viewed between the colored horizontal bars while playing back on the camera and my computer. Both of these cameras have been used at hot tropical beaches and to record ski and snowboard footage in sub zero temps in the mountains. My hunch is that extreme temps and moisture have caused problems... question is, can it be fixed?Comment posted on Feb 23, 2009

Scoured the web and not finding any firmware. Would expect Sony site to have firmware if it was available. Any ideas?
Solution was to use head cleaner... working like a charm now!
