Reads Blu-Rays and PS3 games but won't read DVD's or CD's?!?!
Bought a 40GB PS3 for my dad for his birthday and it reads Blu-Rays and PS3 games just fine but won't read DVD's or CD's at all. What gives, is there a setting that I am missing because my 80GB PS3 has never given me any problem of this type. I updated the PS3 for my dad via a Thumb Drive since they do not have internet connection at their home. Any ideas what is wrong? Thank you for your time, Kj

It sounds like there's an error with the laser that reads blu ray media as PS3 games and blu ray movies are both stored on blu ray disks which is read by a different type of laser then a dvd is read by. There's nothing you could do to fix that on your own, the only fix I've heard of is sending it in to Sony.
This sounds like a hardware issue. The laser diode that reads the blu-rays has probably died. It will need to be serviced by Sony. (The PS3 has separate laser diodes that read DVDs and Blu-Rays. One or both can go bad)
Well from what i hear it is just that the laser inside the ps3 that reads the disc could be damaged, dirty, or even not in the right spot. sometimes the read laser that reads the disc can move from on spot to another if you hit the ps3 or if it falls (ETC).
The blu-ray laser is a 3 part laser (cd dvd and blu-ray) the blu-ray portion has failed. The only way to fix it is to swap the laser out with a working one.
It's not hard to do, there are 1000 tutorials on youtube.
A bad laser could affect the sound cause it can't read all the information from the disc. Try games as well and see if it does the same thing, sounds like a new drive is in order. There is one laser in those drives and require different strengths to read different discs. Also try a music disc that you know is good. If your still getting the same issue then get the drive replaced or just replace the laser if you have some technical knowledge.
This is the number one problem PS3 owners encounter. It's a Sony defect. The blu-ray drive is a three part laser ( cd / dvd / blu-ray). The blu-ray portion always goes out. That's why you're still able to play a few of your DVD PS1 and PS2 games.

this could be several issues.
1:) try putting in A DVD Or CD.
2:) Check that the game your trying to read, is free from Dirt/Dust/Scratches.
If the console reads a CD/DVD ( movie et,c ) theres a chance that the Blu-Ray laser unit has failed ( Burnt-Out Or Other )
Check if the Console guide suggests the use of a laser Head Cleaning Disk ( Or Other ) ** Possible debris on laser read head**
If it reads normal CD/DVDs. Then I,d suspect the blu-ray laser is at fault. This will need to be replaced/repaired or calibrated.
