Try putting both your VCR and the Remote Programming to either channel 3 or 4.

The menu screen displays but it wont play tapes

Do the tapes play in the machine, but you don't get a picture. Or do they not even start to play?

If they play and you don't see a picture then you need to clean the VCR head. You can get a tape head cleaning tape for this.

If the VCR won't play a tape at all, please describe in more detail what happens when you insert a tape for playback and I or someone else at Fixya will help you further.

Picture rolls on playback

Try cleaning the heads, but it seems like the heads may be faulty, you might need to replace the vcr, they don't cost much these days, the repair might cost more than a new vcr these days.

heres a cheap headcleaner, look for one at local shops, wallmart bestbuy and so on

Head alignment

Tracking controls for VHS should have no effect on the DVD player. If a pre-recorded DVD is distorting the picture, along with the VHS, then there's either something wrong with the TV it's played on, or the connection, between the two. Or there is a fault in the electronics of the VHS/DVD combi that deals with the picture.

I'm using a coax cable from symphonic vr-701 to tv and trying to record. it acts like it is recording but just shows snowy image on playback

Coax from wall to coax in on VCR and Vcr Coax out to in on set.

Whatever channel vcr is on this way it will record and pass to set.

Check first you have playback from VCR to TV alone, could have dirty or blocked video heads which in record will just record no watchable picture. Hookup or blocked video heads are most likely.

No video on playback after recording

There is a circuit within the VCR called an RF Converter. This is the circuit that converts the audio and video signals into the RF channel 3 or 4. It sounds like the vidoe is not being processed or the video is not being sent to the converter. Without tracing the video inside the VCR, I can't tell which is the problem here. You can try to play the tape in "review" mode (hit play then FF) and see if you get any video signal. If you do, then there is a possibility that the heads are clogged and need to be cleaned.

Please try that and update this with the results.

Thanks,
Dan

Records fine but playsback with poor picture quality. Tape will playback on another recorder fine.

The video heads are dirty. Clean the heads and your picture should be fine. If a cleaning tape does not clear up the problem, try running a blank tape throught the unit from beginning to end in play mode.

Keep us posted.

LG RC195 dvd/vhs combo

Do you just get a snowy screen when you playback? I think the first thing to try is to clean the video heads. Either try a head cleaning tape, but these are not always the best thing, better still is to remove the lid & carefully using a head cleaning fluid (isopropal alcohol) & a thin piece of card or head cleaning stick (NOT a cloth), carefully & gently wipe the heads which are on the round silver drum. Do not use too much pressure or you will damage the heads, give it time to dry (couple of minutes) & then try playback.

Taping to vhs from digital cable

You do not need to leave the TV on. To get the clearest picture you should connect the AV cables (yellow, white, red) from the cable box to the VCR, and from the VCR to the TV. There should be a setting on both the TV and the VCR to set the input to VIDEO so you don't have to use channel 3. You can shut the TV off while recording if you want. Also be careful because if you use the channel guide or info button while recording, it will show up on the tape.

What speed are you recording at? VCR's with more than 2 heads use different heads at different speeds. Try recording at all speeds and see it that makes a diference on playback.
