Question about Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook

Dell Inspiron E1405 reboots suddenly

Did diagnostic testing through the startup screen and system shuts down during one of the last few tests left to perform. Will often reboot suddenly even if I'm only surfing one web page or working with a notepad document. Have been through the troubleshooting steps on Dell with no help. It's not an upgrade I need....bios is current. Could it be RAM, or something more expensive??

    It was the memory test in the Dell diagnostics that was running....it's preloaded on this machine and is an option on the screen that follows pressing F12 on boot-up.....specifically WHICH memory test I don't recall. The troubleshooting with Dell was through their automated question/solution wizard on their site. It had me try checking for updates to the bios and answer questions regarding the shut downs/restarts. Never did they recommend removing components. I WAS able to run disk cleanup and disk defrag with no issues.....something that has been hanging every time I attempted to do either one for the last month or so. I've cleaned all the vents, reseated the RAM and checked the windows system event log for any clues also... all with no luck. It restarted again on me last night. I think I'll check the vid card manufacturers web site next to look for an updated driver. Any other ideas I could try??

    Yep. You were right! After more troubleshooting, replacing the RAM, scanning for malware again, uninstalling a few questionable new programs, checking for dust & debris once more, etc....I decided to download Sensorview and monitor the CPU temp. Though I know the fan is working (verified it with the pre-installed Dell Utility) and my system didn't "feel" hot, I was curious. Well, the temp spikes up to 70C very quickly upon doing ANYTHING more than an idle! I get a warning about it, then moments later it reboots (there's a set temp for the system to reboot in the BIOS, which is not user-defined or changeable). I bought some Arctic Silver and, after a thorough cleaning of the cooling assembly and heatsink, applied it and have had no improvement with the temp. I'm waiting for a replacement CPU now and will try that as one last ditch effort, but I'm thinking that the high temps that the system has obviously been experiencing over the several weeks that I've been troubleshooting this problem have permanently damaged something beyond my ability or bank account to repair.

    I never did install SP3, as I didn't want MORE issues to deal with and felt that it wasn't going to help my particular problem. Note that I never had a BSOD appear and the auto restart has been unchecked all along. The Dell Utility didn't report any problems and all tests pass if they are done after the system has been off and cooled down; but it reboots during the tests if not (makes sense). Furthermore, I've discovered that most fan monitoring programs out there don't work on Dell's proprietary laptops, so keeping track of or changing things like fan speeds in Windows is almost impossible. I located one program that claims it can work on my laptop, but I haven't tried it yet.

    That's it so far. I'll post a final update after I replace the CPU, but I don't have high hopes about it resolving the problem and fear the worst.

    Hi,

    The most likely culprit in your case, could be a bad memory card or a bad harddrive . As you said the system restarted when you were running the diagnostics on the computer.If you could tell me which diagnostics were runniing when the system restarted. Second, you mentioned you have alreay trouble shot with dell technicians , did they make you remove any components from the computer?

This could be a heating issue, make sure the fan is running and that it is dust free.

Here is a hardware test you can run to test the video and lcd screen. That came with your laptop

Diagnostics before windows using the F12 Diagnostics
* Reboot and press F12 to enter the Boot Menu
* When the boot device list appears, highlight Diagnostics and press Enter
* The computer begins to run the Pre-boot System Assessment, a series of embedded diagnostics that perform initial testing on your system board, keyboard, hard drive, and display
* If the Pre-boot System Assessment completes successfully, you receive the message Booting Dell Diagnostic Utility Partition
* Press any key to continue
* Press any key to start the Dell Diagnostics from the Diagnostics utility partition on your hard drive
* After the Dell Diagnostics loads and the Main Menu screen appears, click the button for the option you want to run -
Express Test = Performs a quick test of devices. The test typically takes 10 to 20 minutes and requires no interaction on your part
Extended Test = Performs a thorough check of devices. The test typically takes 1 hour or more and requires you to answer questions periodically
Custom Test = Tests a specific device. You can customize the tests to be run
Symptom Tree = Allows you to select tests based on a symptom of the problem you are experiencing
* When you have finished running a test, close the screen to return to the Main Menu screen. To exit the Dell Diagnostics and reboot the computer, close the Main Menu screen


during the test it will BEEP ! it is asking you if colored bars are displayed. if the bars look ok then your screen is fine but if during anytime of this test and you see the distortion you described then its the LCD screen or LCD cable

Sound card replacement for dell inspiron e1405


The sound card is integrated into the system board (motherboard). If your audio circuit is defective then you will have to replace the system board.
Try running diagnostics on yourcomputer to see if you have a hardware problem. You should have a CD that camewith the computer that has "Diagnostics and Utilities" listed undercontents. Boot form this CD and run the extended diagnostics.
If you don't have the CD you can go to www.support.dell.com and select "Drivers and Downloads". Enter the"service tag" (serial number) of the computer. You can then download"Diagnostics" .
To boot from a CD disk, power on your computer and tap the key tobring you to the "One time boot menu". Insert the CD into the top CD/DVD driveand then select "Boot from CD/DVD" and hit key. Select the"Run the 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics.

If all tests pass then reload OS ( Operating Software ).

boot the computer in safemode. check if it will still lock up. if it does then run a hardware diagnostic test. if it doesnt clear the startup by opening the system configuration utility then disabling the items under the startup tab then rebooting to normal mode. regarding the computer not going to sleep mode when closing the lid, visit the power options in control panel and check the settings on what the computer does when you close the lid.

I HAVE INSPIRON E1405. HOME KEYS ARE NOT WORKING


First boot to the Utility partition and run diagnostics on the keyboard (Fn Power button) see if they keys work correctly in the Dell Diagnostics keyboard test. If they do not, then either the keyboard or the motherboard is bad and I'd replace the keyboard first.
If the keyboard functions normally in the DIAGs, then the issue is most likely the regional and language settings in CONTROL Panel

Blank/black screen at power on


This is hopefully a possible fix. I have encountered a similar problem with windows xp and vista. the fix I found that will eliviate this problem and a startup-reboot-startup-reboot... If you have your original windows (xp or vista) CD lounch it like you would do to do a system install. As the installation starts it will show ask you if you would like to do a recovery using the recovery console, just press ESC and go on. Press the F8 to accept the license. If Windows is not completly broke, it will find the original installation on your hard drie. It will ask if you want to repair. Press the R key and windows will reinstall your operating system, without destroying your software or data. After it is done the system will go to the windows startup screen. You will need your windows product key located on your machine or on the original software packaging.
I hope this will fix your problem.

i had the same issue on another pc, run the check disk if you can, you may have a boot.ini issue or another vital windows file corrupted.

Dell Inspiron 1520 won't shut down when printer connected.


Try disabling the startup items or edit it. Go to Start -> Run. type msconfig. Choose Diagnostic Startup. Reboot.

Dell Inspiron laptop will turn on but wont take me to log in screen


This indicates a hard drive failure. Try reinstalling the operating system, if you have any problems during or after the reload, then the hard drive is bad and needs replaced.

you will find 3 options you have to download the third one

run a diagnostics
turn off your system
press and hold Fn key ,power on the system, leave fn key
it will start running a diagnostic
it will give you an option to press any key to continue
press any key and you will get 4 options
express test
custom test
extended test and
symptom tree
choose symptom tree
you will get list of devicec
choose keyboard run test
it will highlight some keys you have to press
if everything works fine here
hardware is working fine
then you have to take the system back to day one or use Operating system cd to reinstall the operating system

hi!

black screen at startup? do you still see the Dell logo at startup? try pressing Fn+F8 at the same time at the black screen and see if it works. Or else, try a working external monitor and check if its a OS problem or a screen problem. You can also run a diagnostic test by holding down the Fn key while its off and then press the power button while still pressing on the function key to check if you will still see the diagnostic test for the LCD.
