Maxtor One Touch III 350GB Ext. HDD does not show up on the PC

I've intalled this HDD to my Vista machine and my XP machine but neither of them can read the drive and produce a drive letter. It shows up in Device Manager on both machines, but no drive letter on either. Any ideas. This is a new drive...but I've had it a long time...NIB. Thanks,

This is an external drive and I don't see any jumpers on it. How do you check the jumper settings then?

  • melcanon Feb 23, 2009

    Any other suggestions?

  • melcanon Feb 23, 2009

The drive should be clean, it's never been used.

  • Right click on My Computer.
  • Choose Manage (This will open the Computer Management window).
  • Go to the Storage category and select Disk Management
  • Right click the new drive (usually listed as Hard Disk 1) and "initialize"
  • You now have the option to partition and format the drive.
The default settings of Primary Partition and NTFS- Quick Format are recommended for new users.

Mel,

Do you have any important files on the drive that aren't located anywhere else on your computer?

If that's the case this problem can be addressed very easily. Let me know and we'll go from there.

    It's NOT a jumper issue.

  • RescueTechLA

Use this guide here to enter the Windows Disk Management console:

    http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_managem...

Once you're in it will either prompt you to initialise the external disk, if not just right-click the appropriate disk and initialise or re-formate from there. That will take care of your problem.

Setting the order of the hard disk drive (Master, Slave)

    Jumper Location

There are three cases of the installing jumper(shunt) if the jumper is located in the middle of connectors as above.

They are Lower 32GB, Upper 32GB and With capacity limitation in upper 32GB.

did not immediately see it was a external drive.

ok. first thing you have to do is.

try changing the data cable, better to test it on a different usb port or into a different pc.

Maxtor one touch iii unable to read drive; the external hard drive previously worked and now it doesn't read the drive

please remove the raw drive from the casing
it may be a sata drive of maxtor please power it up directly to your pc with a sata power and sata cable
the drive will get recognised .
if it gets recognised it means the interphase between the disk and the ext casing has been damaged

if you fail , the disk has lost its firm ware or rom chip rom bin file.
both can be flashed and recover the drive
BEcaerful you can break the plastic casing while removing the raw drive as it had been machine dyed and fixed and you may not find any screw s outside

Purchased Maxtor ONE TOUCH III. when I had XP. Now that I have Vista, mAXTOR DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT. iS THERE AN UP-DATE? nEED HELP. Thanks Marty xmartico@san.rr.com

Hey xmartico,

If your recent update from Windows XP to Windows Vista has been the only major change to your computer system since you could access your Maxtor One Touch III last, you may simply need to reinstall the Maxtor software to resolve the problem.

Information provided by the manufacturer has suggested that if no password was ever set, the hard drive should work with Vista immediately with no additional work required. If you had chosen a password however, you may need to reinstall the software and reboot every time you disconnect/shut down the external drive, or disable your user account control (UAC). Please keep in mind though that disabling UAC is strongly discouraged, as it may open your computer to attacks by various malware programs including viruses and spyware.

If you're still not quite sure how to proceed, I would strongly recommend contacting Maxtor directly for further assistance.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

I am not sure what model you have but the Maxtor hard drive downloads site has many system drivers, original software and Vista driver updates. The site is located at:

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/installation_assistance/installation_instructions/external_drives_&_personal_servers/ot3

If that does not work contact Seagate (they own Maxtor) at 1.800.SEAGATE (1.800.732.4283).

If you look at the site carefully you will see a small asterisk near the bottom that says * Windows2000/XP compatible. This seems to apply to several of the available downloads.
