It sounds like a static electricity issue to me, and if so there are many products on the market to eliminate this. The most effective are anti-static carpet spray's that can be purchased from a local carpet dealer or supply. You can research other remedies on the web.
Tip: You can create an inexpensive anti-static spray by mixing laundry fabric softener with water 50/50 into a spray bottle. Lightly mist this spray on carpets and other surfaces to prevent static buildup.
Hope this helps
Good luck...

How do I fix two three way switches where only one of them controls the light?

--------------- wire #1 ---------------------
power in --- -----power out to
--------------- wire #2 --------------------- light

the upstairs switch is improperly wired. With the breaker off, un wire the upstairs switch. Using an inductive tester with the breaker back on (use caution not to get shocked, determine which wires get power from the downstairs switch in EACH position (there is no 'off' in a three way). when you determine which two wires bring power to the upstairs switch, the remaining wire is the light.

Do you have a wiring diagram to wire a security motion detection light between 2 3-way switches so switches can be turned: (on-Motion)/(on- Completely) from 2 differemt locations?

One of the switches needs to be a 4-way then the PIR will act as any other switch. The downfall is if the lights are on and motion is sensed they will turn off.

My preference is to connect the contacts of the security device across the travelers of the three way circuit. The travelers are probably the red and black in the three conductor cable. When motion is detected the lights will turn on regardless of the settings of the three way switches then after timeout they will turn off. If they are turned on with one of the three way switches nothing will happen when the motion detector turns on except you cannot turn the lights off until the security device has turned off.

I hope this helps. The motion contacts need to be isolated from the motion detector power.

What would cause a dimmer to work and then cut off and then it will turn the lights back on in about 20 to 30 minutes

I might suspect a loose connection on your wiring but also you have to consider a faulty dimmer switch.Try to tighten the bulb on its receptacle and the lock screw of your dimmer if it has (Your breaker must turned off avoid you from an electric shock). If the problem still there I've advice you to buy a new dimmer switch to swap for a suspected one. If the problem still there then you need an electrician to isolate the trouble.

Thanks for using fixya...

Our flourescent kitchen light stopped working...turned the switch on one day, the light came on , then went right out. We wanted to change fixtures anyway so we used this as an opportunity. Purchased new...

If you are showing power at the switches, have you checked at the light fixture itself? You will need to read from the black to the white make sure that you have 120 volts if you do then hook up wires to light fixture and read again. If you no longer read 120 volts then you have what I would think is a lost neutral. That is the white wire. You will then have to do a little back tracking to find where your hot feed is coming from. Check this for now and reply back if you need further help. Good luck!

Chain saw will not start McCullough Mac Cat Super 16 AV 35cc tried replacing spark plug and run through start up by steps and still not starting and sounds as if not firing

I would check the stator which is located directly beneath the recoil its held on by two bolts usually it is attached very close to the crank or the fan . What happens is this can build up with rust especially if left outside and this can cause lost of spark. I would get a spark plug tester and see if you have spark. if not i would pull the recoil housing off and clean the rust of the stator. good luck

Two slots on back of dimmer. one has single black the other has black AND ground (green) wire. Is this correct???

Yes, this is a single pole dimmer switch. Connect the green wire to the ground wire in your electrical switch box and connect one black wire to the power (common wire) in the switch box and the other to the wire going to the incandesant light fixture. (Standard dimmers cannot be used with CFL type bulbs).

You should be working fine! Remember to turn off the power to the wiring your connecting this dimmer to to prevent both getting a shock and from damaging the dimmer during installation.

Hope you found this very helpful and best regards!

Connecting Leviton Decora light switch.

At the switch you have a feed wire coming in this brings in power which originates in the electric panel. You also have a feed or feeds goings out to other lts or switches, this you seem to have on the switch. instead of the closet switch loop.undo all the wires. find the only hot this is the one wire you can touch to the others and make different lts come on i reccomend getting a electric tester to do this. FInd the wire that goes to the closet lt. Once your sure put it to the side. wirenut all other wires together with the hot wire. this makes all other switches independantly hot. connect the hot to the switch and the closet lt to switch. I HOPE THIS MAKES SOME SENSE TO YOU . let me know if i can help

My tenant was complaining taht he was getting a shock when he touched a Leviton 104-05611-2WS 15A Decora Single Pole switch for a bedroom closet. My problem is I now cannot figure out how to reconnect the...

The three black wire are as follows: One is the hot wire. One feeds the closet light. One feeds the lights for the kithen and bath. Turn off the power at the circuit breaker or fuse panel and disconnect all three black wires and be sure they aren't touching anything. Turn the power back on and using a test light or meter determine which black wire is live. Turn the power back off and mark the hot wire with a pen, marker, or piece of electrical tape. Connect the wire you marked with a wire nut to one of the other two black wires. Turn the power back on. If the closet light comes on, that is the wire that you want to connect to one of the terminals of the switch. If the lights in the kitchen and bath now work, leave these wires connected together and connect the third wire to one of the switch terminals. Turn the power back off. While the hot wire and the wire for the kitchen might have both connected to the switch terminal, this is no longer allowed by code. Instead take another piece of wire of the same type and connect it to the hot wire and the kitchen wire with the wire nut and connect the other end to the other switch terminal. There should be a green ground screw terminal attached to the metal frame of the switch. Using a green or bare copper wire connect this to the ground wires in the switch box. Reinstall the switch and turn the power back on. Everything should be good now. If the fuse blows or the breaker trips, replace the switch.

Bathroom Pull switch

There are two possibilities here,

1. it is a mechanical failure i.e a part of the linkage has broken leaving the switch in the on position, did you see anything obviously wrong with the old switch?

2. It is an electrical failure either overload or arcing when the switch is being operated sometimes welding the contacts together. This can happen if the light is a fluorescent tube or ring type, which in combination with the fan start up, can cause this situation. If this is the case you need a higher current rated switch.

Please remember to rate this solution.
