Nakamichi MB 100 or Alpine 7949?

By Peter1 - usenet poster

I'm planning on getting a new headunit. It's a toss up between
the Nakamichi MB-100 or the Alpine 7949 plus a 12 disc changer.

What do you guys think?

I had the Nak CD-700 top of the line! I must admit it was the best sounding
unit I ever heard. BUT- it was slow to load and had a lot of mechanical nose
loading. I travel about 80,000 miles a year and need good tunes, the Nak
CD-700 worried me about the over-all dependability of the unit so I sold it
(at a loss).

I went back to the Alpine 7949. I do miss the sound quality of the Nak but
the Alpine just keeps on working!!!

My just my 2 cents.

um...nonot really. Not in my experience. I had the McIntosh deck, and
of course it has 20bit Burr Brown's in it. I then put in the 7949 with a
1-bit DAC, and to me, and to anyone who heard the car after, night and day
difference. Alpine was a lot better. Thats only my experience of course,
but my friend did the same thing and he totally agreed. He has owned store
for 7yrs now and carries both brands.

Well, I know another party here on the forums who claims to have had
nothing but problems with the Nakamichi's. But all I can speak from is
our experience, and for us, they have been very, very reliable

Peter,

What about durability? Will the Naks last like Alpine? There is no
official Nak vendor here in my country. If the Nak breaks down, goodbye
moolah.

The one that sounds better is the one with the better DAC. Nak has a pretty
good background in made-for-car DACs so the MB-100 will probably have a
great DAC given that its an upper end model. Of course, I wouldn't be able
to tell the difference between DACs, but the Naks have a good rep and look
very sharp, the alpine's have become a little tacky lately, thought the 7949
isn't that bad.
