First of all, unplug your washer. You will need to remove the console in order to get to the lid switch. The washer may have release tabs under the console at each front corner. Simply slide a putty knife straight in from the front at each corner and push in while lifting up. You should feel the release tabs push in and the console will pop up. If not equipped with this type of console, you may have a console that has removable end caps. They can be removed by gently prying up on the top of them from the rear on each side. You may have to use a small screwdriver for this. The caps should pop right off. Once removed, you will need to loosen a screw under each cap. Once you have the console loosened, carefully lift it up and lay it back over the rear panel of the washer in its resting position. Be careful not to damage the small plastic hinges that hold it in place. Now you will need to perform the following steps:

1. Under the console you will find the lid switch connector. Unplug the switch from the connector.

2. There will be two brass colored clips. You will need to remove these to remove the machine casing. Place a flat blade screwdriver straight down into the opening on top of the washer and into the groove of the clip. Push the screwdriver away from you while holding into the groove and the clip will release.

3. Open the lid of the washer and place your hand under the front rim of the opening (DO NOT grab the wash tub). Now pull the case from the frame by lifting from the back first.

You do not have to remove it all the way from the frame, just enough to gain access to the switch. All there is to the switch is a couple of screws holding it in and a ground wire. It's a pretty easy repair job. Some models will have the switch located on the right-hand side of the lid rim opening, while other models will have the switch located on the left-hand side near the lid hinge.

Once you've completed your switch installation, make sure you get the case back on the frame correctly by following these steps:

1. While looking down through the lid opening, place the front lip of the machine case UNDER the washer frame and start leaning it back onto the frame. There are four small cleats that must fit into four slots on the case or the washer will vibrate. Make sure the frame is seated properly, lean forward from the front of the washer, grasp both sides of the rear panel and pull towards the case. The rear panel should be seated and flush with the casing before inserting the retaining clips.

2. Insert the brass-colored clips into the slot on the washer rear panel first, and then push straight down into the opening on the top of the washer with some force. If you have the case seated correctly, the clips will snap back in.

3. Make sure you plug the connector from the console back into the lid switch receptacle BEFORE you reassemble the console. This is easy to forget.

I need to replace the switch that starts the drain/spin cycle on my Roper(Whirlpool) washer but how do you get the top panel off the unit?

I believe you're referring to the lid safety switch. Do not operate your machine without this safety switch! The switch / wiring harness are not very hard to install... here's how-

---UNPLUG THE WASHER FROM THE ELECTRICAL OUTLET---
1. Remove console, depending on vintage, there should be a couple of screws that will allow you to rotate the console up and back.
2. Remove 2 gold clips at rear of top. These clips are the only thing that retain the top / lid / cabinet
3. Unplug lid switch harness (small white connector at rear of top)
4. Rotate the cabinet up a few inches at the rear and pull it straight off. The top / lid / cabinet will come off as a single unit. The entire lid switch and harness are connected under the top w/ a couple of screws and a few spring retainers.
5. Buy replacement parts at a local appliance repair shop, including a new striker (the part that pushes the switch down when you close the lid).
6. Reinstall everything reverse from above. When you rotate the cabinet back on, make sure you have the front edge under the base channel and push inward on the rear corners to engage the cabinet on the rear base tabs.

Good luck.

Will not rinse or drain

ok so machine fills up with water then agitates circulates the clothes ..... then wont drain or spin ? if this is what your explaining you need to replace the lid switch.. the top console where called the backsplach need to locate either 2 phillips screws either in the front corner or in the back so you can access the wiring to lid switch there should be a wiring harness to a switch on for the cord plugs into the wall to power the machine the and the other other is to the lid switch unplug washer and disconnect the lid switch the harness coming to the switch make a jumper to the two outside wires replug in unit and test spin cycle this will tell you either the switch is either good and your problem is the same as it was before you jumped out the switch or it will spin and you will need to replace your lid switch

Our Kenmore washer (23812) stops working at the spin cycle, and the water will not drain out of the machine. Help!

This is a clear evidence of a broken lid switch. Power to the drive motor is routed through the lid switch during the drain/spin cycle. The machine, therefore, cannot drain and spin when the lid switch is not working. The drain pump doesn't work because it is directly coupled to the rear spline of the motor. Replace the lid switch to address the problem.

Release the console from the top of the cabinet depending on the model of your machine then pull forward and up on the console and lay it back on the hinges.

Disconnect the lid switch harness connector by pressing on the tab located in the middle and pulling it up.

The cabinet is attached to the rear of the washer by two brass-colored retaining clips. Insert a flat blade screwdriver into the turned-up edge of the clip, located on both sides, and then pry back to release the clip from the slot in the cabinet.

Open and hold the lid while grabbing the cabinet front opening then tilt the top of the cabinet toward you by pulling the cabinet away from the base. This releases the front and back slots of the cabinet from the tabs in the front and back of the base.

Using the side of your leg and/or body as a support for the front of the cabinet, carefully lift up the cabinet and lay the front on a cushioned floor to access the lid switch.

Remove the lid switch ground and mounting screws then release the wire harness from the metal retainers. Pull the lid switch connector out and install the new lid switch in reverse order of the removal steps.

Bring the cabinet to the front of the washer then slide the front bottom rail of the cabinet under the rail at the base of the machine then lay down the cabinet into position. Make sure the slots in the cabinet sit into the tabs at the base of machine.

Reconnect the lid switch harness then push the retaining clips back down into position to secure the cabinet to the rear of the machine. Reinstall and secure the console to complete the repair.

My washer, kenmore 90 series can agitate and complete washing cycle but will not drain and spine.

Sounds like your lid switch is broken. This is located under the top of the washer and is activated by a tab that hangs off the side of the lid.
Accessing this part requires you to flip up the control panel by removing two phillips head screws in either the front bottom corners (may be behind the endcap covers), or rear bottom corners, pull panel forward and lift to disengage the tabs at the bottom. Flip the panel upwards and it will swing back out of the way.
Next you will see one wire connector going into the top of the machine, this is actually your lid switch connector, disconnect it. Now using a flat screwdriver pry the front of the two brass clips towards the rear of the washer (put tip of screwdriver into front most part of clip and press handle of screwdriver towards rear of machine). The clips should pop off the top pretty easily.
Now you can open the lid and place a hand on the front of the opening and pull the cabinet forward. The entire front and side wrapper will come off the base platform and you can set it on the floor to gain access to the lid switch that is screwed to the underside.
Good luck to you on this!

LS error

The machine control detected that the lid switch is not functioning properly. Raise the top part of the washer to gain access to the lid switch.

Disconnect the machine from the power source. Gently pry the emblem from the front of the machine and remove the T20 torx screw hidden behind it. Slide the top of the washer forward and raise its front. Prop it up high enough to allow easy access to the lid switch.

The lid switch is activated by an actuator (part number 19119) mounted on a hinge. It will not work properly if the actuator is damaged.

Check the operation of the lid switch using a multimeter. Disconnect the lid switch wiring harness and connect the test leads of the multimeter (set to X1 or ohm) to the terminals of the lid switch and activate it. The multimeter should read zero ohms while the lid switch is activated and open when deactivated.

Replace the lid switch if it is broken or if it fails the test above. Remove the lid switch mounting screw and install the new lid switch. Reconnect the wiring harness and slide the top of the washer back into position. Reinstall the T20 torx screw and the emblem.

How to replace kenmore elite washer model 110 16962503 lid switch

Hi,

Let me offer you a generic solution for most of the Kenmore washers :-

There are 2 screws that secure the console to the cabinet top. The are located in the front or rear corners, and on a Kenmore, may be hidden behind the end caps. Remove the screws, and tilt the cabinet backwards. Remove the 2 gold clips, and disconnect the wiring harness. Tilt the cabinet forward, and off of the base. The lid switch can now be accessed from inside the cabinet (I sit inside).

Hope i helped you.

Thanks.
