Use only the oil weight on the oil cap or owners manual if the cap does not list the oil weight. Most older vehicles called for eather 10w30 or 5w30 depending on the ambient temp. In the past 10 or so years, manufacturers updated engines for better fuel efficiency by tightening tolerances in the engines, thereby needing a lighter oil weight to provide sufficient lubrication for the parts So manufacturers started requiring 5w20 oil in their engines. I work as an Auto Care Technician at Walmart, and we will NOT do an oil change for any weight other than the recommended weight by the manufacturer. If it calls for 5w20, we use 5w20, regardless of what the owner wants. This is to avoid any possible engine oil related problems. People will blame someone else if they have a warranty issue the dealer refuses to honor for whatever reason, and it would go back to the last place the vehicle had the oil changed at. So therefore at Walmart, we follow the manufacturers recommended oil weight for all oil changes.

SOURCE: can i use 5w30 instead of 5w20 oil on a 2006

you can but not recommended. the reason for the thinner oil is the tolerances in the bearing races on these engines are very tight, requiring thinner oil. 5w30 is ok for sure if you are going synthetic.

Testimonial: "thank you very much. ran across some synthetic oil .. cant complain it was free.."

Can I use a synthetic 5w20 in my 2008 Suzuki Forenzs? I have always used 5w30.

If it calls for 5W30, use 5W30 only. The weight of the motor oil is very important for proper lubrication. It does not matter if synthetic or not, as long as you use the exact motor oil that is specified in your owners manual. I do not recommend using 5W20 motor oil. Never !!!

Nissan quest

More thanlikely it uses 5w30. Use of 5w20 was not intruduced until newer cars of today came out because of the decreased tollerrencles between engine components whic calls for a lower visocoty oil. Most engines in the 90'2 used either 10w30 or 5w30. To know for sure you can always check the owners manual from the car or it should also be licten on the tag under the hood or tag on radiarior cross brace. I would bet on 5w30 as correct oil
