All power and battery connections checked, intermittant problems over the past few months when switching on it would make two loud beeping noises then come on but, the date and time would revert back to 1/1/06.
This time there's nothing at all.
Would appreciate any help but keep it simple not very technical !!!

Re: Compaq presario c 500 won't turn on
Hi there First of all the bios battery has run out, this is why its not keeping date and time. Secondly the system memory has developed a fault, take the memory out and clean the slots and contacts, you will find the memory under a small panel underneath the laptop, laptop memory looks like this >> When cleaned re-seat the memory and try booting the machine up, if it does all good!! You will however have to take the laptop to a PC repair shop to have the bios battery changed as this means that the laptop has to be dissembled to get to the battery. To keep the date and time keep the AC power jack plugged in.
For what you are saying you had a problem with the motherboad battery that one that looks like a round watch battery. That's why it didn't save anything after the computer was turn off.
Now the problem seems to be the CMOS of the motherboard you can try to flash it but, if you don't get even image of the P.O.S.T on the screen that means you need a new CMOS, ergo new board or a CMOS chip that costs about the same.

You need to replace your old battery. Don't over charged your battery. If you are using your laptop in your house it is better not to use it with battery. Just use the power adaptor/supply only. Then make sure you will drain the battery let say once a week. =)
The charger is functioning well. There are still two possible reasons why your computer is not turning on. 1. The battery, 2. The computer itself.
What you need to do is to isolate the problem.
Here's what you can do to isolate the problem.
1. Remove the battery from the computer. 2. Turn on the computer using the cord. Remember not to put back the battery yet. Just the cable and the computer connected. If the computer turns on, then, you need to replace the battery. 3. If it still not turning on by using the cord alone. Try to wiggle the cord to check whether it's loose or not. Check if there are some signs of power on the computer. If there is a power like lights lit in the computer, then, it's the computer that's having the problem. You need to bring it to a technician if that's the situation.
Please let me know if there are any development after doing the troubleshooting above so that I can get back to you if you need my help.
Please first make sure that your adaptor is working.
Try to remove the battery and connect your laptop to the adaptor. Swith on. If nothing chages, then there is good chance that you have a motherboard related problem.
Check the ac adapter is the proper one for that laptop.
Check the power jack is not damaged or loose.
let laptop site without battery or power for a few hours.
remove battery and retry power.
try another ac adapter
if that doesn't work, you may have a reset button but not likely to solve the problem.
sounds like motherboard is damaged, or something blew.
