Wireless broadband connection

By Duke - usenet poster

Home built PCAMD Duron 1.4 Mhz, 1 gid Ram, 15 gig HD, onboard sound and
video on ECS MB. Two similar PC's sharing wireless broadband connection,
not networked. 2nd PC with USB NIC loses connection when portable phone is
in use. 1st PC stays connected. Phone support from RoadRunner say I need
to open ICS, but error box states to contact system administrator when
attempted to open. I am the sys admin and am logged on as such. Using
w2kPro. Is there any way to open ICS?

Thank you,
James

It could possibly be that you haven't fitted your filter on the phone connection. If you're using ADSL as your broadband, each phone connection sharing that paticular phone number each requires one of those filters. I hope the solution is a simple one for you

Hello James,
If they are sharing a common wireless broadband connection then they are
networked

I don't understand what Internet Connection Sharing has got to do with a
portable phone, cell or otherwise, ICS is the system windows uses to share
an internet connection with other machines on your network, one computer has
direct access to the net, the others access the net through it.
When you say 'wireless broadband connection' is this a commercial thing you
pay a subscription for, or are you referring to a wireless access point or
router in your home, that is then connected to adsl or cable, etc?
Cell phones, and some 'dect' portables can disrupt wireless networks,
because of the similar frequencies they use, is this your problem?

To enable ICS, yes, you do have to be a member of the administrators group,
have you or anyone else, accidently or otherwise changed your membership.
You also need more than one 'network' connection to enable ICS, you then
share the internet connection.

What computers have you got connected to what, and how, because, unless I'm
just in stupid mode today (very possible), then I think the group needs some
more info from you.

I need the wireless since I'm in a condo
and don't want to run RJ45. It'll be handy if I ever get a laptop. I just
went and exchanged the 2.4 ghz phone for a 900mhz. Hopefully that will cure
the problem.
Thanks to all of you for your time and expertise.

I'll try to be more specific.
I've subscribed to RoadRunner Cable Broadband. Computer one is hard wired
to the wireless modem/router. Computer two has the wireless usb connection,
and is the one losing the connection when our cordless phone is in use,
which is a 2.4 ghz.
We are using a Motorola wireless cable modem gateway, 5 function: Surfboard
modem, wireless access point, router, print server with firewall, SBG1000.
A Motorola wireless usb adapter on computer 2. The computers are not
networked for file or print sharing.

Sounds like you have a 2.4ghz phone. If so that is the problem. The
phone signal is interreferring with the wifi.
Do you have the 2nd computer plugged into the first before you connect
to the cable box? If the answer is yes then you are standing in the
barnyard looking at the barndoor but going thru the neighbors field to
go thru it. Put a router in if you do not already have one, then
connect both computers either wired or wireless to the router and
connect the router to the cable box. This last connection MUST be
wired. ICS means that the 1st computer must be on for the 2nd computer
to access the net. With a router this is no longer true AND your 1st
computer will be faster since it does not have to transfer the data
thru it to get to the 2nd computer.
