Question about Dell Latitude D610 Notebook
Battery light is flashing back and forth from green to orange.
I had the same problem with a D620 at work. The laptop worked fine but the lights kept flashing on the front. I tried a few different things but it ended up being a bad battery. If the battery is less than a year old Dell will replace for free. Otherwise, you'll have to purchase a new battery.

That usually indicates battery is beginning to go bad. Eventually it will not hold a charge and will need to be replaced.

SOURCE: dell battery problem
Dell, apparently have had some problems with their batteries, as they called back some, including yours.
Goto Dells homepage here and goto -> a bit down this page -> Step 1: Is your battery model affected?
Hope your battery is among these, as you will be able to get a new one.

try to remove your batt and check if laptop works fine with ac adapter alone.
if yes then put batt in then check how much charge you have if you have about 10% then update the bios immediately.
if fails then have the batt replaced.

Maybe your battery was damage due to over charging it. You need to replace your battery. The desktop icon can says it's fully charged because you have plugged it and those are the indication that your battery was damage if you unplugged the AC power. The battery of the laptop are disposable and it cannot be repaire. The best solution of your problem was to replace your battery.
