My problem is sound

Sounds like you lost the drivers. Check Device Manager to confirm. Windows Update might load, but you may have to find on web.

I m format my compaq presario c700 laptop $lost sound drive

While formating the hard disk of a Branded laptop, make sure that you have either the Brands Installation Disk, or the apt drivers which would match the Hardware of the Board. As its difficult for you to determine the hardware specification using the Device Manager which you will find in the control panel - System Property - Hardware <Tab> Device Manager and check the details of the drivers for that motherboard. For the current situation please download the driver from the link below and install. Hope this resolves your Issue.

Good Luck.

Recently got this machine from my daughter who got a new machine. Re formatted hard drive, installed XP, working great, but after about a week, I lost the sound. Any ideas?

1) we will 1st go to device manager and check the drivers
2) check if the mute is checked of unchecked

3) if the driver is not there in device manager then we will go and install the sound drivers from HP.COM

4) we need to check the os if it came with vista of xp
if vista then u have downgraded the os.then it can be the issue with compatablity

5) if it was working after installing xp if sound was there then we can do system recovery

6)
we can do recovery(last option)

Try downloading the AC97 HD Audio Codecs and reinstalling over what you have.

Post your results or any additional errors back here.

No Audio device

You are NOT alone! There are a lot of folks trying to correct this issue. I have been somewhat successful, but not always. The last 'fix' is a VIA download that is supposed to work with all AC97 cards. I had the same issue with the computer I am writting this from, and the sound is working once again. So try the download at:

http://www.download.com/VIA-Vinyl-AC-97-Codec-Combo-Driver/3000-2120_4-10163027.html

And PLEASE let me know if it works or not. The more information I can gather, the more I can help.
