Question about Compaq Hard Drive SCSI 73GB 15000RPM (73.4GB. Genuine HP/ 289234-001 Ultra320 hot-pluggable ... (289243001BULK)
Can someone please advice me on what to do in order to format my hard drive for re installation. I have a HP genuine hard drive (40GB) from a HP Pavilion PC and want to use it on this Compaq PC. When I tried to reformat it using the normal procedure on Windows, it couldn't. I believe its something to do with the Recovery partition that was on it from the earlier PC. How can I reformat the whole hard drive and then reinstall Windows XP on this Compaq PC? Or I can't use a genuine HP hard drive from another computer on this Compaq PC?
If you want to eliminate the recovery partition, my favorite method is to get a copy of Ubuntu and use it in live mode to access 'gparted' which is a good simple partition editor. If you have access to another similar method, like Partition Magic, that should be perfectly fine. Once you get the whole drive set up as one, I imagine XP should be quite happy. Unless that old drive is having other issues... (I'd probably throw 'smartctl' at it while I was in Ubuntu to see if there were any obvious impending failures.)
