I want to install window on IBM ThinkPad 2645, but I can't seem to get a dos prompt when I reboot. I don't see a selection there that says "DOS Prompt" by itself. I do see "SafeMode with Dos Prompt", but that just scrolls up text, and doesn't allow me to do anything. Is there some other way to get to the Dos Prompt so that I can install window. "Previously i used the window xp on this laptop and not know how the boot option sate on this laptop either not no the boot option is sate or bootable CD problem.

Does it have floppy? If so, check out bootdisk.com you'll have to jump through a few hoops to get it working in it's present condition.

I'd probably go the bios update route first though, they've probably addressed this issue. Check ibm's support site here:

Usually you just have to press the "delete" key, it should say something about pressing F2 or F11 to enter setup. Sometimes you'll have to press the escape key in order to see these options.

I'm not 100% clear on what exactly you are asking but i think you need to:

First, go into the bios and change your boot order. Make sure the cd-rom is the first boot up device.

You will need to access the BIOS to change the boot settings to enable boot from CD.
This is usually done by pressing the Del button as you soon as you power on. Also you may see flash on screen for 1 or 2 seconds Press F12 for boot options. That will work too. Keep pressing it till you get access to boot option or BIOS. You need to find the area that deals with boot devices. Enable boot from CD as a second option is fine.
Save he settings and reboot with CD in place. Should allow you to do your install .

I've got an Dell Inspiron 9300 LCD

Try running diags Fn + Power button see if anything fails

Since you can boot to the BIOS, then the system is posting, so I suspect you have either a Windows issue or a hard drive issue.

If the HDD passes diagnostics, I'd try booting to the XP CD and see if you can press R for recovery console and run the command CHKDSK /R and see if that resolves

Post back with the results

Want to re-format MSI Notebook S420. Screen continuously shows windows 'loading' but never boots. I have the recovery CD but because the computer never actually starts, I'm not sure what to do with it!MSI

Hello megan_van

While your laptop is on, eject the optical drive and insert the recovery CD. Turn off your laptop via the power button, and turn it back on. The recovery CD should boot. Follow the on-screen instructions to do a clean install.

If the recovery CD doesn't boot, try holding down the C key after turning on your laptop. If it still doesn't boot, you will have to change the boot order in BIOS. Don't worry, this is easier than it sounds! Follow these instructions:

1. Turn on your laptop, and look for a message that says something like PRESS (USUALLY F2, F8, DEL, ETC.) TO ENTER SETUP / BIOS. Hit that key before the Windows logo appears.

2. After hitting the relevant key, you'll be taken to the BIOS setup utility. All BIOS utilities have different appearances, but it is basically a set of menus containing different settings for your laptops hardware. Somewhere on the screen (usually the bottom), is a set of instructions for navigation your way around the BIOS. Follow these instructions to navigate your way to the option for changing the boot order.

N.B. Since every BIOS setup utility is different, the specifics on where the boot order options are located varies from computer to computer. The menu option or configuration item might be called boot options, boot, boot order, etc. The boot order option may even be located in a general menu like advanced options, advanced BIOS features, other options, etc.

3. Once you've located it, use the navigational controls to place the optical drive above the hard drive (usually the +/- keys). To be certain that the recovery CD boots, it's probably best to move the optical drive to the top of this list.

4. Within the navigational controls, there is usually an option to SAVE & EXIT. Press this key. If there isn't, look for a menu option with the heading EXIT. A SETUP CONFIRMATION box will now usually appear asking you to confrm the changes you've made to the BIOS before exiting.

N.B. The SETUP CONFIRMATION box can sometimes be worded cryptically. Read the message carefully to be sure that you're saving your changes instead of exiting WITHOUT saving your changes!

Your computer should now restart automatically, and the recovery CD should now boot.

Hope this helps. If you require further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask.

My laptop won't boot from cd

to reset the BIOS, there is a small battery somewhere in your computer. if you unplug it for 3 seconds, it will reset the BIOS. I RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT TRY THIS! get a service professional. If this doesn't work you might need to get a new laptop.

CD Drive on Travelmate 2500 not working

Dear Grant625,

yes you can do this way. only one thing you need to make sure and double check boot option in BIOS that; In booting sequence USB Drive should be the first one to boot as this way laptop will boot from there and you can install recovery discs. I beielve you have external USB CD Drive!

I am not sure exactly which key to press on your Laptop but when your computer boots up you need to press quickly "DEL" or "F2" or something like this to go in BIOS options before it goes to windows loading screen. you can see which key to press when computer boots up and these information comes on the screen somewhere before windows loading screen.

let me know if any problem.

Thanks.

Regards,

AJoshi

Brand new notebook .. windows then, screen freeze..acer picture

This may require a "repair" of windows.

Get a Windows XP Operating system disk with the correct service pack that the notebook has installed (usually XP SP2).

1. Boot from it (put it in CD drive and restart the laptop).

2. If you still get the same problem start up, you need to set the laptop to boot from CD.

3. Restart laptop, press Delete key or F2, or F12 (it should say one of these on the screen) to enter the Setup. or another key to get "boot options"

4. In Setup (BIOS) Use Right Arrow to find the Boot Options. Use the instructions to move the CD-ROM to first position, above HDD (hard drive). Press Esc, then F10 to save your changes and exit.

5. The XP CD Rom should now run. It should come to a screen where you are asked to press R to repair windows.

6. When it comes to the command prompt, restart the laptop

Hopefully the laptop should boot OK again.

Laptop won't boot

I presume this is on Windows XP? There must have been a virus or improper logging out or OS problems with the computer. If you still have the original installation CD for your Windows XP, and it is bootable, you can insert the Boot CD and Press "R" for repair after the BIOS boot is finished. Then just follow repair instructions to restore your OS.

If you dont have a boot CD, you need to have a professional reinstall Windows for you.
