Kitch-aid fridge using lots of electricity and shorting circuit

In '07, PG&E kept turning our power on and off, and as a result, the refrigerator stopped getting cold. The repairman said the compressor starter switch was broken and installed a 3 in 1 kit starter/overload relay/capacitor--$250. Yesterday, my electrician was working on the new main breaker box he installed last week, and again the power was on and off quite a bit. The refrigerator started shorting the circuit--we tried plugging it into different circuits--but same result everytime. It must have been pulling out way too much electricity. We plugged into an ungrounded circuit temporarily but then it just stopped working. No cold coming out. The repairman spent an hour on it this morning and couldn't figure out what's wrong. He asked for a diagram of the parts, but I don't have one. He said he would come back when I find one. He was nice not to charge me anything. My husband wants me to buy a new fridge tomorrow because he thinks this one is too tempermental. What should I do?

Like your picture. I bought it in '01 so not under warranty. Can a regular refrigerator repairman fix a winding on the compressor?

  • natabeasy Feb 24, 2009

You are kind to help me with my problem. Thank you. I just sent Kitchenaid an email. I also checked the warranties on some comparable refrigerators and you were right--6-10 year warranty on the compressor. Let's hope it applies to me as well! Thanks again!

The relay kit that the other repairman put on may not have been enough to fix your problem.
you may have a winding that has shorted out on your compressor. if so it has a 5 year warranty and should be fixed for no charge under warranty.
call kitchenaid and ask for them to recommend an authorized repair company to check out your unit.
use their 800 number and hopefully they will take care of your problems and you wont need to replace this unit.

yes most repairmen who do refrigerator repairs will know how to replace the compressor and reservice the sealed system, but by that time you will have spent 600-700 more dollars. i would just have a second opinion done to verify that the windings are shorted in your compressor.
thats why i was hoping you would call kitchenaid as they will alot of the time help you out with the cost of the repairs.
what you need to do is tell them you think the compressor is shorting out and its smells like something is "burning". if you get a really nice person talking with you they have the power to give you an authorization for repairs.
they really are a good company to deal with and i would try that before you throw this one out.
if you cant get any help on the repairs, then it might be time to just buy a new unit.
p.s. some kitchenaid refr's have a 6-12 year warranty on the compressor, so do call them.
    good luck.
also the windings cant be replaced by themselves, they are sealed inside the compressor and thats the only way to replace it.

What could result if your car has an electrical short?

This is a very wide question. Anything bad from blowing a fuse to burnt wiring can result from a short. Just to cover the basics. What is a short?
An electrical circuit consists of a power supply (battery, alternator), a load (electric motor, lamp, resistor etc) a switch and finally a conductor - the wires and a fuse.
The electricity must flow through the whole circuit in order for it to work. A short circuit, commonly called a short, means a path is present for some reason or other that causes the electricity to bypass some parts of the designed circuit.
Say for example you have a front end accident, and the headlamp is broken is such a way that the bulb leads are shorted to earth. There is now a short between the headlamp wires and earth, and the headlamp fuse will burn out, also known as "blow".
If, however, an accident causes a short between the fuse box and the power supply, the wires themselves now will act as a fuse, and they will burn out., causing lots of smoke and toxic fumes.
Car electrics are designed to be safe from electric fires and short circuits by using fuses, circuit breakers and relays, but funny things can happen. I hope this helps.

I have a fisher and paykel fridge freezer model e372b my power kept tripping a few days ago and I didn't know why we switched the power box back on and it tripped again we turned it back on and it tripped...

Check the power cord on the fridge to make sure it is not broken or frayed. There is an electrical short somewhere. Check the recepticle that is used for the fridge by plugging something else in it, such as a lamp, to see if the receptacle has a short in it.

We had a power surge now when i plug my fridge in it blows my circuit breaker

The power surge might have damaged the wiring to the refrigerator. You can check this one with a megar. That is only if the circuit breaker blows off, ONLY when the unit is turned on. Else, the problem may be that current is flowing through the neutral. You can check it with a tester and if so, report it to the electricity board. Else, as a temporary measure, you can connect your unit, bypassing the circuit breaker. But in that case the circuit breaker will never blow off regarding any complaints to the unit and may result in a slight power wastage.

Fridge keeps blowing the breaker

Depending on what is causing the breaker to blow will be important to know. Refrigerators do draw a good bit of power on a 20 amp circuit especially when the refrigerator goes into defrost. Refrigerators are made to run on a 20 amp circuit without other machines or appliances using the same power circuit. Circuit breakers weaken over time too especially if they have more than they are. rated for plugged into the same circuit. And your circuit may be doing its job by detecting an excessive draw of power when the refrigerator is plugged in. You must have someone that knows electricity to inspect your refrigerator for shorting and the circuit it is plugged to for correct wiring for every ones safety. Thanks, Sea Breeze

My whirlpool aide by side fridge icemaker is making buzzing or humming noise

Welcome to fixya.
I'm Huuum and happy to assist you,

You said, your ice maker is making a buzzing or humming noise ice maker isn't making much ice. . fridge is about 2 1/2 years old.

This sounds like a clogged water line or a electrical short !
I would get service rather than take a chance on electrical fire.
Or burn up the circuit in the ice maker.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to advise you.
