Question about Whirlpool GR478LXP Electric Kitchen Range
My teenage son has damaged my beloved 4-5 year old black Thermadore ceramic cooktop. He put a Cuisinart stainless steel pot (with a copper layer) on one burner, turned the burner on high, and "forgot" to put the water in. He left the cooktop unattended for "several minutes", resulting in a ring of "schmutz" on the burner. Talk about not being able to boil water. Before he fessed up to what really happened, I thought it was a simple boil over and used cooktop cleaner and a single edge razor blade. When I realized this wasn't a typical boil over, he produced the ruined pot, and now I've got a big ring around the burner. It's light gray and it's not going anywhere. Is there a way for me to repair it myself? My brother, a general contractor, suggested jeweler's rouge. Is that a good idea? Be nice. If not, what else can I do? Do I have to replace the entire cooktop? I haven't tried to use that burner. I don't want to make it worse. Is it possible to replace just the glass top? Is that expensive?
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

I was able to remove the base from the socket by inserting pliers and opening them so that they pressed against the inner sides of the base and then turning while exerting pressure.

there are 3 screws under the front of the top with the oven door open actually there are 6 screws but only 3 you need to remove to raise the glass top up!! to service the burners

On this website: http://www.repairclinic.com/0078.asp#Whirlpool , it shows all of the codes for the Whirlpool errors. Based on the remarks, if it shows a "4 digit failure code" it is "Shorted
"Replace Electronic Range Control/Clock (ERC)"
But verify this as I am not an appliance repair specialist. I am a computer nerd who just knows how to find information. I am actually trying to figure out an answer to my own problem with my Whirlpool Gold Accubake.
