Question about GE GSS20IETCC 20.0 Cu. Ft. Side-By-Side Refrigerator w/Dispenser & External Temperature Controls: Bi...

Fridge seems to require max cold temp control

I have a GE TFX24RLB side-by-side manufactured in 1988. The fridge & freezer are cold enough (about 36degF & 0 degF), but the fridge control has to be set nearest its highest (coldest) setting (9) to do so. It doesn't seem to run too much, and I've checked the fans work. I've even checked the temp control using an Ohmmeter and it checks out OK. Coils are clean, and evap is not ice-bound.

(A BTW, I do notice the side edge of the fridge door nearest the freezer is warm, but I assume this is an anti-condensation design feature (?).)

Do I have a problem? Could the temp control/capillary still be bad? Or defrost control? Compressor need refridgerant? I would think that a lower control setting is possible & still maintain cold fridge level.

Did you check to be sure the the compressor cooling fan is operational? if this is bad it will cause a problem similar to your condition. another thing if this checks ok is that your temp control could be getting weak, ( it has small springs connected to the contacts) and may need replacing. the fact that it will get to 0f tells me that compressor and freon system should be fine.
you mentioned the warm area on the side of your door is a anti moisture feature. if this area is abnormally hot it would indicate a bad condenser fan motor which is the compressor cooling fan.
If you have any further questions let me know thanks Peyton

We have a side by side and the refrigerator side is freezing everything. we have the settings on 2 and D

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

ONE OF THE MOST COMMON CAUSES FOR A SERVICE CALL IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU STATE, THE MAX SETTINGS ARE SET AND STILL ITS NOT GETTING COOLER, ESPECIALLY IN FRIDGE SECTION RIGHT?
IF YOU ARE MAKING ICE THATS DRY THE FREEZER IS OK,
THE PROBLEM 90% OF THE TIME IS THIS
AS THE FRIDGE SECTION IS RELIANT 100% UPON THE COLD AIR MIGRATING INTO THE FRIDGE COMPARTMENT VIA A LITTLE FLAPPER DOOR THAT OPENS OR CLOSES OR IN BETWEEN AS WELL , THUS ALLOWING MORE OR LESS AIR TO MIGRATE INTO THE REFRIGERATOR SIDE FROM THE FREEZER SIDE
THE STUPIDEST THING IS THE FRIDGE SAYS MAX COLD ON BOTH SETTINGS, ONE ACTUALLY CONTROLS THE COMPRESSOR AND DETERMINES HOW LONG THE COMPRESSOR WILL RUN IT USUALLY IS OFF AND 1-10 , THE ONE THAT TURNS OFF THE COMPRESSOR ISNT THE ONE THAT DETERMINES THE REFRIGERATORS TEMP! THE OTHER SETTING FOR COLDER FREEZER DOES!!!! TAKE THAT SETTING BACK OFF OF MAX FOR COLDER FREEZER AND THE LITTLE FLAPPER WILL OPEN ALL THE WAY , WHEN SET FOR MAX COLD THE FRIDGE SIDE STARVES!, ANY SETTING 1-10 SHOULD STILL KEEP THE FREEZER FREEZING AND MAKING ICE IS THE KEY! IF IT CAN THEN ITS NOT A REFRIGERATION PROBLEM , IT IS A CIRCULATION ISSUE

GE TFX26KRDA WW 2001 side by side refrig/freezer w warm fridge

Cleaned the condenser coils which were dusty but not severely so. Checked the evaporator coils which were NOT iced. Reset the fridge to coldest setting and freezer to #5 (mid range of temperature) and waited a full 36 hours. Fridge temp is 40 F and freezer is about 0F. Not sure what is different except coldest setting on fridge. Warm weather is here but not warm enough to require AC. Temps in late afternoon in house about 77-80F. Any thoughts are appreciated because I suspect this problem is not completely resolved.

Ge fridge GSS25LFGww, fridge part freezing food

Hi, Change the controls back to normal settings. Make sure the freezer is getting 0 to 5 above. If the freezer is getting cold enough, try and turn the cold control to 1 and see if the refrigerator shuts off. It sounds like the cold control in not working properly and will need to be replaced. NOTE: The freezer temp has to be right temp or the fresh food side will not work proper.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
