Have just taken my first few frames on a polaroid 1000 & they are completely black.Has the shutter failed & how can i fix this?

This is an old land camera. Sure you removed the lens cap?
I'm not sure, but i thought on ifixit.com they did write something about a polaroid camera. Be careful, parts of this camera will work electrical, so the battery (is that with the film?) should have enough power to let the camera work correct.

My Polaroid 600 prints out 2 films at a time and the first one is half printed and the second is blank.

Are you using film from The Impossible Project, or is it old original Polaroid stock? The latter will be old and stale and may have gummed up internally. if it's faulty Impossible Project stock, then they will replace it. but you need to check first whether it's a faulty camera or faulty film.

Ultimately, unless you want to waste money on more (very expensive) film, you'd be better to get another Polaroid 600 model and switch your current photo pack into it to see whether the problem is the same. Most charity and thrift shops have boxes of these obsolete cameras sitting out back or throw out a few of them every week, you can also usually get them free from FreeCycle/Freegle or GumTree.

When you swap the film from one 600 to another, slide a photo you've already taken or the original darkslide into the ejection slot to sit on top of the photo pack, if done correctly this ensures that you don't waste another exposure when you swap the photo pack over. .

How cheap can you get the film for a polaroid 600 and where

There is, and never has been, cheap film for the Polaroid 600, it was always an expensive way to take photos. If you see it cheaply online then it's usually unusable and a waste of money, but usually it sells for ridiculously high prices.

Original Polaroid 600 film is long-expired and a real gamble as the chemicals may have leaked or dried out and the built-in battery is usually flat. Refrigerated photo packs will definitely have dead batteries as cold kills them even faster.

There is only one supplier of freshly manufactured compatible film now, The Impossible Project. You can buy direct from the company or from a few other suppliers, but the few retail stockists worldwide tend to charge a lot more for it as people will pay for the convenience of instant gratification.

Please read all the information you can on the company website before ordering as there are some important differences between their products and the original Polaroid-manufactured material. The main differences are that you only get 8 photos per pack, not 10, and that the material must be sheltered from light as it develops. It's also not anywhere near as fade resistant, so either scan the images you wish to retain or buy their new Dry Age kit which dries out the chemicals in the photo so they're no longer active. The colour film also uses different dyes so will not look the same as the original colour images.
