Wow! Cannot believe that just a little oil would have such dire consequences. How much $ are we talkin about? for repair? for new? Was just cleaning brothers drive while he was gone out of town. Just trying to help him out & do him a favor. No good deed goes unpunished. What do i do to make things right? Will have fixed but what will it cost? Thank you.

I recently ran my two-cycle Toro Powerlite with straight gas for a tank since I had no oil on hand. Once it ran out of gas, the engine wouldn't restart. When I brought to the dealer, he said that in this type of engine, without oil, it wears out the "rings" around the piston. Therefore since the seal is now worn down, I have no compression in the gas engine, so it won't run again. They do not fix or rebuild on two-cycle engines so he pointed out it's a paperweight now. Same mistake, whod'a know. Oops. I'll make sure to have gas for my snowblower, weed wacker and hedge clippers going forward. Wow.

I USED TO WORK AT A HARDWARE STORE AND A LOT OF PEOPLE ALWAYS HAD TROUBLE WITH 2 CYCLE ANYTHINGS(GAS & OIL MIX).IF IT IS AN ELECTRIC START MAKE A FRESH MIX OF GAS AND OIL TO SPECS BUT USE A LITTLE MORE OIL THAN INSTRUCTED(THIS WILL NOT HURT THE ENGINE).ADD THE GAS AND OIL MIX TO TANK. PUT CHOKE TO FULL, PRIME IT 5 OR 6 TIMES PLUG IN THE ELECTRIC START AND PRESS THE BUTTON AND HOLD IT DOWN 'TIL YOU HEAR THE ENGINE START TO REVOLVE.THIS MAKE TAKE A FEW TIMES BUT IT WORKED FOR ME.YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BEING THAT THE ENGINE MAYBE SEIZED ANYWAY. GOOD LUCK !!

Check the engine compression with a compression tester. Most likely you have a blown head gasket.

What kind gas does the 5.5 hp chipper shedder take

Small engines can run on anything supreme or regular, some say they can build up carbon deposits with the lower grades, but I have never seen evidence of it. I don't use additives as they can separate out in some cases clogging the carburetor over a few cool months. I add a couple spoonfuls of 10-40 or 30 weight oil to my gas even if it is not prescribed to protect the upper end under hard use. I like Pennzoil, Havoline, Valvoline since reading a lab comparison years ago. It will fire up anyway with a dash of oil mixed in. I use 10-40 weight oil for all weather use in mowers, chainsaws, weedeaters, chippers...

If you are referring to the MAF(Mass Airflow Sensor),it will cause this exact problem if it is installed backwards.(I see many car build shows, and they get it wrong so much,I thinks they are doing it on purpose to make the show more interesting).

I was using the pressure washer with no problems and then ran out of gas. I added gas and now it won't start. Any suggestions? There isn't a choke on the unit either.

If it is a gas powered system it will have a choke. It could be some sort of automatic configuration without a lever for the end user to adjust however so we'll start with the basics. All engines need fuel, air, and spark to run. Since you know that you ran out of fuel try cycling the engine without starting to get some fuel into the system. You can do this a couple ways but the easiest would be to disconnect the spark plug pull the string start or turn the key a couple times. While your at it you may want to pull out the spark plug and see if the point is fouled. A little WD-40 and some fine grit sandpaper will clean it up pretty easily.

You can also check the air filter / exhaust. the usually have some foam type insert in or around. if it looks melted and not spongy you'll wnat to replace it.

I have had a similar problem with my lawnmower and although they are not the same machine, the principals behind the engine operation are.

Let me know if you are able to get it running.

My MTD shredder, after sitting unused for 2 years, won't start. How do I make it start?

Drain all the old gas (if it's a small amount, you can throw it into your car's nearly-full gas tank even if it's mixed with oil.) add fresh gas. you may need to try to start it several times to give the new gas a chance to work it's way to the engine.

If this doesn't work, then try starting fluid (ether in a spray can) find the air intake and remove the filter sponge. Spray the starting fluid into the air intake and try to start it. If you don't have starting fluid, you can use WD-40.

DON'T SPRAY WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING!

Even if the engine beigns to sputter out - just let it stop and then spray more ether before starting again.

If neither of these work, then you should replace the sprak plug. If the engine started with ether, but won't stay running, then you should check the fuel line or fuel filter for blockage.
