First thing to try is re-securing the keyboard ribbon on the motherboard. to do that on most dells its as simple as popping off the top strip where the power button is and then remove the screw holding the keyboard down and carefully pull the keyboard away till you are able to pull the retaining clip up and remove the ribbon from the motherboard. then reinsert it securely and push the retaining clip down. sometimes there are screws on the underside of the laptop that hold the keyboard on but ive never come across a dell that does that personally.

If re-securing the ribbon doesnt do the trick, then you are better off buying a keyboard off of ebay(usually between 15 and 20 dollars) than messing with the insides of the keyboard. good luck.

Sounds like a little something was spilled on that area of the keyboard. Luckily, the keys are easy to pop off. Use a tiny flathead screwdriver to pry under one edge and take them off. Then use a Q-tip with some rubbing alcohol on it to clean around the area and replace the keys. Don't forget to clean the keys themselves just to be sure. If you want to go all out, you can remove the entire keyboard, run it under some water, let it dry then replace it. Direction for keyboard removal can be found on the Dell site. I had to do that for my wife's laptop after our granddaughter spilled something. Let me know if you need any additional info.

Hi there.
Many laptop keyboards tend to start doing this after prolonged use (including my own), there is no way of fixing them.
What you need to do is replace the keyboard, in the meantime, you can use a small usb keyboard or use the on-screen until you get the keyboard replaced.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

Dell 1150 laptop configuration module problem

Hi, you can perform a system restore by accessing safe mode by pressing the ESC button during bootup. Restore system to a time before the problem began. You will need to perform a full virus scan straight after normal bootup is achieved. Hope this helps

Look for a key labeled "Fn" (blue lettering) on the lower left side of the keyboard

Hold the "Fn" key and then use the Up/Down arrows to adjust brightness.

If that doesn't work, reboot your laptop and get into the BIOS. There is a screen for brightness. I don't recall how it is labeled, but it's one of the last pages as you cycle through the BIOS options.

Take the computer to a qualified technician, who can replace the keyboard, as the least-expensive "try" at trouble-shooting.

Since a keyboard transmits "codes" to the motherboard,
e.g., left-shift-has-been-pressed, and left-shift-has-been-released,
and the motherboard interprets those codes, it is NOT likely that
the motherboard is misinterpreting the codes, especially given that
the "bad' letters are in a straight line on your keyboard.

Find an external USB keyboard, and plug it in.
If it works correctly in the first 15 minutes, then the problem is NOT the motherboard.

Keyboard is more than likely bad. Call dell or your local PC shop to get it replaced. If it is still under warranty Dell will send you a keyboard to replace it with. If you take it to a local PC shop tell them if it is under warranty
