Cannot format portable hdd

Step 1:
When you connect an external hard drive or USB flash drive to your PC computer, the drive should appear in the "Computer" window. However, if the data on the drive is corrupted, you may receive an error saying that the disk is not accessible. In order to get the removable disk working again, you will need to boot up your computer using the Windows installation disk and then format the corrupted drive.
Connect the removable disk to your computer. Insert the Windows installation disk into your optical drive and reboot the system. Press any key on the keyboard when you see the prompt asking if you want to boot to the CD. Press "Next" and then click on the "I accept the license terms" button. Click "Custom" when the program asks you what type of installation you want to perform. Click on the "Drive options (advanced)" button. The next window will display a list of all the hard drives connected to your computer. The removable disk will appear, even if its data is inaccessible. Highlight the removable disk that you want to format and then choose the "NTFS" option. Click "OK" to clear the data and format the hard drive.

TIPS To Protect Your Data When Selling Your pc

Sometimes you end up selling their equipment or give rise to dismiss. There may be a useful machine, but decided to upgrade to something a little faster. The only big concern for many when it comes to selling a computer, what happens to the data on the machine. You may have files or important documents that you do not want others to see. Find out what you can do to protect your old data.

You can reformat the disk. This means that you take all the files on the machine and remove them so that the reader will return to a virgin state. The advantage is that your data is gone, but the downside is that the operating system has also disappeared.

You can use the Windows operating system CD, and download it again. What is this destructive if you are installing is to remove all the files and put the car back, was when it was originally purchased. Your data should be gone.

Another option is to just delete the stuff you do not want others to find on your disk. To keep those technically inclined to find deleted data, filling the disk with media files and delete them again and again. In this way, it is more difficult to find the old data, if not impossible.

You can get a free program called SDelete that is made for this purpose. Will permanently remove a file instead of leaving traces on the disk. In this way, you can feel comfortable getting rid of things without affecting the operating system installation.

Another option is to simply buy a new computer disk when you sell. He is the only way to protect 100% of your data because you still have the old disk.

My 310gb transend hard disk all foders became shortcut lnk files size shows 2kb,please guide me to recover data?

Hi there,your external hard disk may be infected by virus.Firstly,remove the virus with anti-virus software in your computer.Then you can recover your files from hard disk with third party data recovery software.I have succeed to recover files from hard disk with Tenorshare data recovery.It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard disk to look for lost data.
By the way,you can download a trial version and scan your hard disk for free to preview whether your files can be recovered. http://www.any-data-recovery.com/index.htm

An external unit has two main parts:
* the disk-drive
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter

In your case, the adapter seems to be working OK.

But, when Windows tries to read the 'table-of-contents' from the disk-drive, it cannot,
and so you get the 'please insert' message.

You might want to disassemble the unit, and remove the disk-drive,
and connect it as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer,
just to bypass the adapter, to see if the disk itself can be read.

So, about 0.1% of the blocks on the disk-drive are 'unreadable'.
This means that the other 99.9% of the disk-drive _could_ be readable,
namely all your files.

Search online for 'DATA RECOVERY' software -- it reads through the blocks on the disk-drive,
block-by-block, trying to 'stitch' blocks back together (like assembling a jigsaw puzzle) to
reconstruct the (unreadable) table-of-contents, and thus make it possible to copy the files
from that drive onto the 'C:' drive of the desktop computer.

My aspire l310 won't boot. It keeps telling me media cable test failure and disk boot failure. Help daniel

sounds like hard disk related. turn it off and disconnect the power cord, remove and reconnect both the power and data cables to the hard disk, disconnect any external USB storage and remove any floppy disk, if any. If you get the same result, try to connect the har disk using different power & data cables (IDE/SATA), and test it on another SATA channel if available. If same error, you may need to reformat the hard disk and reinstall WIndows, or you may have to get a new Hard Disk if it fails even when tried on another computer.

WD External HD No longer Accessible

In Disk Management, find your WD disk in the list ain the bottom portion of the center ccolumn of the screen. If it still says Disk #, right click on it and select Reactivate Disk from the context menu. This should bring the disk back online. If it says Missing and the disk was configured as a Dynamic Disk, you can also use the Reactivate Disk method. Otherwise, you will need to delete all associated volumes and recreate the disk from scratch (losing all data on the disk).

Try connecting it to another computer. If you can see your data then back it up etc.
After you have recovered your data connect it to your computer, from Disk Manager, remove the partition, recreate it again and then format the drive, hopefully your external drive will be operational again.
There is a possibility that the hard disk has died and you will have lost your data. If you are desparate, hard drive data recovery companies charge an arm and a leg to recover data from dead drives.
