My tape measure will not lock the tape on different measurements

It is broke. Simple. They wear out. Buy another one. If it is new spray it with some lubricate. If you don't have the spray, a new tape measure is cheaper anyway.

How to rewind a tape measure

You'll need to take the tape casing apart but need special security torx bits to do that (a T-8 and T-9). Once apart (careful, two small springs inside) you can take the tape spool apart and rewind the tape to re-establish tension. Then re-assemble!

Hi...sorry for the bad image but if you can make it out ...this tape measure is offered in two types of measurements either Feet/Inches/Eighths or Tenths/Hundredths ...if your father's is off by an inch my guess is that the Lufkin is measuring in Tenths/Hundredths.

Hope this helped!

I can not extend the tape measuer more then 4-1/2 ft without the tape twisting. The tape measuer was only a few months old when it started twisting on me. It is very frustrating when you are trying to get...

Hi there,
If your talking about the tape twisting side ways just feed the tape out and slide it on the surface and when the catch goes over the end turn the body so that the catch turns down and pull it in to place.Put a strain on the tape blade and turn the tape body back up the way it needs to be.I like the smaller Stanly tapes but when it comes to a 25 foot tape, a Luftin is lighter and easier to use. They have a Stanly tape filler on the inside. They make an inch wide case .The Max is just to bulky and the Luftin is lighter. This is an ebay price.Thank You for choosing FixYa.com.

I have a Stanley Power Lock 30' Tape Measure with 2' 9" of tape that I cannot get back into the housing, Is there an easy solution to this problem? Advise and thanks,

you can try to pull the tape all the way out and then with a rag lightly oiled let the tape rewind back into the housing if that does not work then you probably need to purchase a new tape. for whatever reasona the spring inside has gotten weak. i use a tape daily and have had this same problem when a tape gets old or abused

Tape broke on W928 tape measure

I looked around and can't find a replacement tape for this 12 footer. The tape measure itself seems to be no longer available.
I suggest recycling it and buying a new tape measure.

How to read steel tape?

Not enough info, a steel ruler could be in 64's of an inch, a steel tape measure is usually in 16's of an inch but some are in 32's of an inch until you get past the 12" mark.

How to fix a stanley power-lock 25 ft measuring tape

Take the four corner screws out and the last center (short screw out). Split the shells in two pieces. Seperate the yellow or measureing tape from the black spindle tape. The spindle tape holds or attaches the measurement tap to the spindle. I have only seen a plastic spindle and this tutorial only applies to the plastic one. Take the spindle out and set the half casings on their backs, so you can see the cavity of the shells. The black spindle tape will be preformed to only wrap one way. Go ahead and attach the yello measuring tape to the black spindle tape. Pay close attention which side of the yellow tape is facing up or in our intended direction which is towards the center of the spindle. This way when you pull the tape out it is facing up for the person can see the measure marks. Wrap the tape tightly. If the tabs are broke and there's no way to secure the Yellow to the black, use two strips of Duct Tape and adhere the sections together. Do not use too much tape, since the clearance inside the spindle is tight. Once you wrap the tape inside, put a temporary piece of tape to secure the yellow and keep it from unraveling again. Next take a 1" wood screw and a battery powered drill and insert the screw into the center of the plastic spindle. Slowly tap the screw until it catches, do not drill the screw all the way in, only enough to catch in the plastic. Once the screw is partly into the plastic place the spindle into one of the half shells. The reason for the drill and screw is to return the tension back to the internal spring. Whichever side you placed the screw into you need to be sure to apply a clockwise turn. Keep the hex head of the drill so to not release the tension. At the same time place the spindle in the half shell and lock its square center piece into the shell. Now you can remove the screw from the center, then remove the tape holding the yellow meauring tape down, Still holding the measuring tape so it wont unravel, begin placing the last half shell on. Obviously you need to line everything up so the tape slides freely through its opening. Align the tape slide stop, which rests between the two shell halves. Replace the screws and remember the short one goes in the middle and holds down the belt clip.
