My ps3 turns on and off ok, plays movies off the hard drive and will play ps3 games but has suddenly stopped playing movies ( dvd & blu ray ) it recognises the disc and goes to play it but the screen...

That is actually a poor conclusion. There are three different lasers, one for blu-ray, one DVD and one for CD games all in one holder inside. It certainly CAN be the laser. The description id the DVD/Blu-ray part is having focus problems. Contact Sony for a service center that can install a new drive (It needs to be calibrated on install)

Screen freezes playing Blue Ray discs only.

I answer this question like ten times a day so don't feel bad.

The blu-ray laser in your PS3 is a three part laser (cd / dvd / blu-ray). They last only 1-3 years with average use. It's a Sony defect.

Playstation 2 comsole making strange noises

there is this kind of disc that has little brushes on it for cleaning lens in dvd players, cd players, computers, basicly anything with disc player of some sort and it works great for PS2s (I have used it on mine and my freind's.) I can't remember the name of my cd now now and I can't find it but you can probley find one in most computer stores or wal-marts. but it is posible that the there is something wrong with the motor/gear assebley in the drive on your ps2 (which the cd wouldn't fix) but that is probly not the case since it plays games alright. Good Luck! I Hope You Get The Problem Fixed!!
