Maxtor 3200 200 gig not recognized

My maxtor 3200 200 gig hard drive was working just fine but all of a sudden the computer says that the drive is corrupt and unreadable. i tried different usb hubs and even unplugged it for a while and still nothing. i also tried uninstalling the drive and then reinstalling it. in device manager the hard drive is labeled as RAW.

no i don't want to format the drive. i just pretty much want the computer to read the drive like it is supposed to. it is not a new harddrive.

  • robie8404 Feb 23, 2009

if there is anything that i can do without formatting i will do that.

  • robie8404 Feb 23, 2009

why did the hard drive all of a sudden stop working and become a RAW drive.

OK, You might want to try the following.

I would suggest a file recovery program.
Here are a couple that work fairly well:
    PC Inspector (freeware)
    http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pcinsp...

    Zero assumption Recovery
    http://www.z-a-recovery.com
    The demo is limited
It will only recover 'up to' four folders per run
But you can make multiple runs
GetDataBack works 'really' well, if your files are important enough to spend some bucks.

    http://www.runtime.org/
You will need another hard drive, optical drive, or whatever to copy the files to.

If the files on the drive are corrupt then I'm afraid I have no solution for you. Sorry because I know how frustrating it is to lose info you value.

    Sorry again my friend :o(

    Mike.

Have checked this hard disk with CHKDSK tool on your PC? Is it still not available for RAW drivers? OK! To fix this external drive with RAW file system, without crucial data left inside, you can merely format it from RAW to NTFS or FAT. But, if you do leave much important data on this RAW format drive, you'd better recover data from this RAW drive before any format.
What you need is only RAW file system external drive data recovery software.
Hope my words are not too late for you!

Check your system storage points to see if there was an automatic installation. I had the same problem and tried everything you did, uninstalled Microsoft service pack 3.0 from CPU and EHD works fine now.

When your drive is in RAW format, the best thing you can do is try to recover the files and then get the hard drive replaced. I would recommend trying the trial version of this program: http://www.recovermyfiles.com

If that doesn't work, let me know, and I'll see if I can come up with another way to solve the problem

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Try connecting it to another computer.
If it is not detected, then either the disk-drive "inside" the unit is dead, or the "adapter" (USB-to-Disk-Drive) inside the unit is dead.

If the latter, disassemble the case, remove the disk-drive, and attach it as an "internal" hard-drive to your computer.

im going to assume your on XP for these instructions. other wise you still need to do the same thing.

right click the my computer desktop or the start menu. go down to properties. open the hardware tab. open the device manager. Scroll down to it, remove the driver, just delete the whole entry. unplug the hard drive, then plug it in again. See if that works.

Try to remove the drive and connect it directly to another computer.
If still doesn't spin up then most likely the board has failed.

Try some other USB device (memory-stick, printer, camera) in the USB slot in the Vista computer, just to "prove" that Vista will recognize _any_ USB device connected to that slot.
