Seven Rules for Replacing a Refrigerator

Here are seven rules of thumb that can keep your purchase of a replacement refrigerator from becoming a continuing drain on your pocketbook:
1) Don't buy a refrigerator bigger than you need. One rule is to choose a model that has 10 cubic feet of food storage for a family of two and then add an extra cubic foot for each additional person in the household. The freezer should be 40 to 45 percent as large as the food storage section. Thus a family of 4 will want to pick a model that is between16.5 and 17.5 cubic feet, and a family of 6 might choose a model that is about 20 cubic feet.
2) Side-by-side refrigerator/freezers use more energy than units with the freezer above or below the fresh food compartment. Side-by-sides also take up more space for the same storage volume.
3) Through-the-door features, like cold water or automatic ice dispensers, impose as much as a 20 percent penalty in increased electricity usage as compared to similar models without these extras.
4) Manual defrost models use less energy than automatic defrost units, consuming as much as one-third less. However, you should defrost the freezer when 1/4 inch of frost has accumulated.
5) Two refrigerators use more electricity than a single large refrigerator with equivalent storage space. And it is never a good idea to keep a half empty "his" refrigerator in the garage with beer and soda, while a "hers" refrigerator is in the kitchen with room to spare.
6) Don't let an old, inefficient refrigerator pass onto the used appliance market - recycle it for parts only. If your old refrigerator earns a negative investment return for you, it won't reward a family that must pay $50 or $80 on top of the hefty energy bills.
7)) Look for the Energy Star label. It is a quick and easy way to avoid paying for a mistake with each month's electricity bill.

My Frigidaire refrigerator is at 60 degrees Fahrenheit and will not cool down

There are a few possibilities. First, Is the freezer portion working okay? If yes, then the problem is blocked air flow from the freezer to the frig. If no, then the cooling fan could be bad or the thermostat could be bad. First check for temperature in Freezer section, should be about 4-8 degrees no more. If it is cold, then locate the cooling fan behind the back of the frig and see if it is moving or listen for movement. If it is moving then rearrange the food in your freezer compartment.and frig compartment away from the vents. If it is not moving, then the thermocouple could be bad. compressor problems and freon leaks are not that common unless the frig has been moved alot. The cooling fan or thermocouple or overstuffed freezer compartment are the usual suspects in 90 % of cooling problems. cooling fans and thermocouples can be cleaned by using canned compressed air to remove dust which will sometimes cause a failure. The parts are inexpensive but labor is about $80. Start with the freezer because all of the cooling for the whole unit starts in the freezer.

Oder in freezer and refrigerator

the smell is bacteria caused by the buildup of moss from condensation.switch off unit do a complete defrost,( leave the doors open).wipe out the interior with chlorine bleach(the smell will go in about an hour or so)syringe the drain with bleach and then dry thoroughly.after drying switch on and leave to settle for 24 hours to regain operating temp(fridge +2/5c...freezer -18c)then refill with food, covering any open dishes.try to fill all drawers in freezer with food and any spare space fill with screwed up newspaper.
use a toothbrush to get into door seals/corners DO NOT USE HEAT/SHARP OBJECTS TO DEFROST.use towels in bottom to soak up all the water....

I have a Jenn-Air side by side frig. The freezer side cools too cold, the frig side not enough. 2 weeks ago I took all the food out of freezer and noticed ice build up on back. I unplugged unit, let it...

If the freezer is staying cold it sounds like a defrost system problem. A bad timer, heater or thermostat can cause frost to build up on the coils and block air flow to the refrig side. Check out ACMEHowTo.com for troubleshooting the defroster problem.
There is a small duct between the freezer and refrigerator side if this is blocked the frig side won't cool.

Fishy smell in frig

Change the filter. Depending on your water supply and where you are located, you will get a buildup of junk that smells like fish.
It should be changed about every 6 months.

Bad Smell

you might ry removeing hte rear panel of freezer. gain access to the evapotator area, thats where the fan thatcirculates air is as well, if the smells stillback there washing the inside wont do anything. once fully exposed i would saturate area with an odor nuetralizer . I use odo-ban. and be sure to pour asolution of baking soda and water downt the drain assy (under the evaperator) that will allow the baking soda to reamin in the lower drip tray long after teh eater evaporates. once refrig gets vcold again the smells generrally disapate anyway
