Question about Kenmore Drop-In Bobbin 16231 Mechanical Sewing Machine

Open Question

I have my grandmother's old Kenmore 1814 sewing machine

When I push the foot petal it moves very slowly and I get a burning smell. I manually turn the dial and it is very hard to turn. I would also love to find a manual; I don't have one. Thanks!

SOURCE: kenmore sewing machine model 385 16764

There's a website called managemyhome.com which is sponsored by Sears. It's free to join. Go to the Home Manager column and choose Owner's Manuals from the drop down menu.

You can type in the brand name (Kenmore) and model number of your machine. Not all of them are in there but, I did find the one for the 1950280 question. It's a pdf file.

For the 38516764 question, please double check your model number. I received either no response or a Kenmore Elite dishwasher manual in response to my query.

SOURCE: can't tighten clutch on Kenmore zig zag sewing machine.

The clutch has fallen off the shaft. Remove the very small screw in the clutch release screw to remove the clutch release. Place the clutch(round thing with ears on it) back on the shaft with the center ears pointing towards the outside. Put the clutch release screw back on. Tighten it to make sure it works
properly. Put the small screw back in the clutch release screw and test it again. If it will not tighten or release properly, remove the clutch ,rotate it180 degrees and try it again. This should solve your problem.

I have never seen it be the circuit board, always is the foot control switch. I dont understand the stitch getting tight though. And yes, it could be the circuit board.

SOURCE: start/stop button problem will the machine run on its own

You have to unplug the power cord to the the foot pedal. The manual doesn't include this. And good stinkin luck with Sears or Kenmore customer service! Just pull the cord out of the machine and the start/stop button will work. Try it on a slower setting at first though. Also, if you need additional presser feet, Singer, Brother, Janome, and possibly other brands will usually work as long as they are the snap on type. I really do like my machine, good luck with yours!

SOURCE: it keeps sewing after the foot petal is let off -

Sounds like the foot petal needs to be taken apart and cleaned. Make sure everything is unplugged. Use WD-40 on everything except any electrical parts, it has chemical  agents in it that break down the plastic after a long period of time.

How to thread kenmore sear roebuck sewing machine model 158. 1789181 got at auction no books

Sears carries a lot of manuals for their machines, although usually not free. In the meantime, there are many threading videos that demonstrate machine threading. Machines of similar models will thread similarly.

Kenmore 158 17550 Sewing Machine Tutorial

Probably best to raise the presser foot when threading so the thread will seat in the tension disk.

Before trying to sew, be sure to oil your machine with fresh, good quality sewing machine oil. Open the top, the side near the needle bar, and turn it on its back to get the underside. Place a couple drops of oil every place that metal rubs on metal. Adding hot air from a handheld hairdryer will make the oil effective quicker.

Be sure to install a brand new needle and use good quality thread--not old or bargain bin variety!

On the top left, there is probably a push button. This is the presser foot pressure adjustment. When the machine is stored, this pop-up button should be released (press down on the outer ring). Being stored with the pressure full on will eventually compress the spring that provides the pressure. Also, be sure to store the machine with the presser foot in the down position (preferably on a piece of scrap fabric). Avoid running the machine with the presser foot in direct contact with the feed dogs as this will wear the feed dogs and also create grooves in the presser foot.

Whenever I plug it in & turn it on and push the foot pedal all it does is hmmmm. The needle doesn't go up and down. Answers to why this is?

***Check to see if the bobbin threader is in the on setting.
***The motor or the main shaft of the sewing machine may be stuck.
***Turn the hand wheel. Does it turn with ease and move the needle at the same time?
***Take the cover to the motor off. Check the belt. Replace if necessary. When replacing it is necessary to push the foot pedal slightly while setting the motor to move the belt to it's easiest and fastest position.
***If the motor/belt is good then you will have to investigate the main shaft. Remove the top cover and look at the shaft going through the machine. Place drops of oil on any parts that move. Use only sewing machine oil !
***Under the machine remove the cover and place oil on moving parts.
***If you want to clean it is a good tool to use q tips. Between gears use silicon grease.
***Do the front of the machine the same. Clean and oil.
***If your machine is really stuck due to rust you will have to do some serious cleaning. Use carburetor cleaner for this. Always work in a well ventilated area. After allowing this to set you may have to force the hand wheel to turn.
Good Luck!

My sewing machine electricity is on but it only growls when i step on the foot peddle. Is the motor froze or what can I do to make it work

Depends on your sewing machine brand and model. If it is an older mechanical (NOT computerized) model. It could very well need cleaning and oiling, as the old oil has solidified and the motor is unable to turn the mechanical parts. Do not continue to force the motor to run as it may burn out.. Consult your owner's manual under the maintenance section for instructions. Use ONLY good quality sewing machine oil, NOT 3-in-1, WD-40, cooking oil, or the oil can from your grandmother's sewing basket.

Check the handwheel. If it is pulled out, the clutch is not engaged. Try pushing it in! (It would be really nice if the solution is this easy!)
