Black screen after the intial startup

I get the startup splash page and then nothing but black screen. Yesterday I was running really slowly, so I deleted a bunch of files, ran a defrag and it was working. When I tried to turn it on today, and this is what happened.

Hi there.
Try to boot up in safe mode (hit F8 on start up) if it lets you log in in safe mode perform a system restore and take the pc back a couple of days, there is an on screen menu to help you through this. If you can get booted in safe mode post back please.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!

On startup my dell 8300 only has a black screen no splash screen cannot start in safe mode diagnostic lights abc are green d is amber your Black screen Problem

If you are not getting any Video at all, No Dell SPlash screen, nothing, then I'd look at a video card as the 1st point of Failure.

If you Get a Dell Splash screen, but nothing afterward, then the hard drive is suspect

Start up screens are off to the left.

There's nothing wrong with the monitor. Monitors remember the settings for different video modes, including horizontal position. The video mode used when the splash screen displays is a size almost every monitor can handle. Then the mode switches to whatever you've set once Windows finishes startup. As long as the display is normal once Windows is running, you really don't need to be concerned.

If you want to correct the problem, you need to put the monitor into the same resolution and use its menu functions to adjust the size and position. Try pressing F8 when the machine boots to get into the Windows startup menu. This will probably also be shifted, so you can adjust the settings while the menu is being displayed.

Acer aspire 3000 dropped on floor. Random startup events

theres a good chance that the hard drive platletes and parking head have been damaged, although this is not a huge problem to replace, as long as your screen is working ok, then it is worth replacing. you can access it on the underside of the casing, in the largest compartment, remove all screws and the hard drive will be held in with more screws.
