MagicJack VOIP sound cuts in and out

I have a MagicJack VOIP device and the sound cuts in and out. I've been online with 4 techs from MagicJack, and they keep acting like my computer is the issue. I have high speed broadband, download speeds 2800kbps upload about 200kbps, AMD Athlon 1.09 GHz, 512 RAM Windows XP home SP2, NVIDIA nForce audio. We have real bad voice break up. We are using Windows XP and we have tried all MJ's suggestions with results. We have purchased new phones and phone cables. Nothing seems to make a difference. We bought AT&T wireless phones and they have the same problems.

I have the same problem. I am on a Mac and have broadband cable internet connection. What is odd is that it is fine during the day and after about 9:30 at night. It is very bad from about 7 PM to 9:30 PM the time I usually make long distance social calls, which is why I bought it to begin with. The person I am calling says my voice sounds great, but their voice drops part of about every other word. Very distracting!! I would love for this to work. I even bought new phones to see if that would fix the problem. If I spend much more money, it is really defeating the purpose for me to have this thing. I might as well go back to using a phone card for long distance.

MagicJack® Set Up

After you have connected the device for the first time and registered the device, you should probably run TCP Optimizer to “tune” your computer to work with it in an efficient manner; it can be downloaded from the following website:

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

You can use the TCP Optimizer by following these short instructions:

  1. Choose your maximum Connection Speed from the slider bar (the maximum available bandwidth, in kilobits per second)
  2. Choose your Network Interface, or check to Modify All Network Adapters
  3. Pick "Optimal settings" from the radio-buttons near the bottom of the program
  4. Click on the "Apply changes" button and reboot

MagicJack® Uses

  1. Inexpensive Secondary Telephone Service
  2. Excellent adjunct to expensive prime time and/or poor indoor Cellular Telephone Service
  3. Distribute magicJack® phone number to all contacts as primary contact number
  4. When outdoors have the magicJack® phone number forwarded to cell phone
  5. When indoors use magickJack® phone number to reach and be reached by contacts

Tip

How to connect your VOIP phone service (IE Vonage, MagicJack, Via Talk) to...

Are you tired of being tied down to your computer area to use your VOIP phone service (IE Vonage, MagicJack, Via Talk or ITP)? Here is a way to make your existing home phone jacks work with your VOIP.

***** DO NOT USE THIS TIP IF YOU HAVE DSL (FROM THE PHONE COMPANY) FOR YOUR INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER OR IF YOU ARE IN AN APARTMENT BUILDING*****

Items you will need-
  1. An existing home telephone jack near your VOIP service modem.
  2. A screwdriver
  3. A telephone cord long enough to reach from the VOIP service jack to the existing phone jack.
COMPLETE THESE DIRECTIONS EXACTLY AND IN ORDER OTHERWISE DAMAGE COULD RESULT TO YOUR VOIP MODEM.
NOTE THAT EACH HOME IS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT AND MAY HAVE NON-STANDARD WIRING SITUATIONS OR HAZARDS UNFORESEEABLE SO THIS TIP IS TO BE DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK AND YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY CONSEQUENCES THAT ARISE FROM WORKING ON YOUR OWN HOUSE SUCH AS IF YOU DAMAGE ANYTHING OR GET SHOCKED OR FRY YOUR VOIP MODEM AND BURN DOWN YOUR HOUSE IT'S ALL ON YOU....

So hopefully I haven't scared you off from trying this tip since it is fairly simple to do but complements of lawsuit happy America I had to cover the disclaimers....

Let's get started...

First thing you need to do is to locate the main telephone junction box to your home usually located outside near the power meter. Here are some pics of some standard used boxes.5124c69.jpg
There is a screw keeping the customer access door closed. Loosen this screw and open the access door to expose the home wiring. Note: this screw does not usually come completely out. To set you at ease, yes it is completely legal for you to access this portion of the box. The portion that you are not supposed to access is restricted by a security bolt and can not be opened with a normal screwdriver.

Once you have the access door open there are two types of commonly used connections.

  1. The most common is one similar to this picture. Disconnect the lines attached to the test jacks.
If you have more than one line here then loosen the screw terminals one at a time and place the wires from the other lines to the same terminals on Line 1 so all jacks in the home should be available.
Note: there may be a cover over where the screw terminals are for where LINE 1or 2 are, simply pull the cover toward you to expose the terminals.

2) The second style is very similar to the first but the area where the screw terminals are has a plastic rectangular bar about 2 inches long and 1 inch wide with telephone lines attached to it (often times Red and Green or Blue and White/Blue). If you have this style of connection push the side of the bar closest to the center of the box and then pull outwards and to the right this should expose the "Test Jack". Once the bar has been extended twist it 1/4 turn counterclockwise to remove it from its mounting bar. Use caution not to disconnect the phone wires attached to the bar.

Almost there and now the hardest part should be done.

Now return to where the VOIP modem is located and remove the telephone cable for the phone that was being used for your VOIP service.

Connect the new phone cord to the same outlet that the phone was connected to on the VOIP modem and then connect the other end to the home phone jack.

If you still want to connect a phone to the jack you are connecting to here then a simple telephone line splitter plugged into the jack will fix that.

Now try to connect a phone to any of the phone jacks in your home and you should have dial tone. Note that most phone service is made to comfortably handle 4 phones that connect to a phone jack.

Magicjack support

If this is the stand alone unit, I don't know how they work. But the other kind must be plugged into your computer to work, the computer must be left on and connected to the internet because it works on what is called VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocal). No internet connection, no phone.

MagicJack, Regarding beeping (sounds like keypad touch) problem

If you notice, you will see random digits entering into your magic Jack's number dialing pad by itself.

I guess this is due for poor software writing on the part of magic Jack's driver in your PC that must be sharing (or leaks from) a memory region or register on your PC. It could also be due to using a poor choice of register address, DMA address, or Interrupt number in your PC by Magic Jack Driver. This problem seems to have been introduced by their new software update in late June 2009.

Magic Jack should solve this problem, but they have poor support. They may not even know about this and other problems with USB Port Letter Reservation. I am sick of watching their promotional video (the guy, his children and the two dogs!) on their site when I am searching for a tech support email or a phone number.

After 3 months my MagicJack stopped working. I have this same problem with 3 different MagicJack devices: after dialing a few numbers successfully, when I dial the next number I hear only 1 or 2 rings then...

Likewise I had the same problem, spent 3 days and on hold for 2 hours at a time, told the tech who was doing a live link into my computer suddenly went on break, then was gone for the day...their TECHNICAL SUPPORT IS A NIGHTMARE...and no, we still do not have a solution to our phone and went through alllllll the same gyrations!

MagicJack VOIP sound cuts in and out

MJ ran fine for me from July 2008 to October 2009, when choppiness and cutouts started and continue to today. This is a MJ network problem, there is no fix in your own computer, as I have tried everything - computers, internet speeds, headset with phones unplugged, other Magicjacks. The MJ servers have just become overloaded. MJ is dead.

Nikkai VoIP funky internet phone - software problem?

I installed a U.S. Robotics VoIP phone on a Vista Laptop and had exactly the same problem.

The reason why it happens is because a VoIP phone contains a microphone and speaker. Windows Vista/XP senses the microphone and speaker as two seperate entities. It then sets them both as the default microphone and speaker. You won't notice this being done until you get the 'Index out of bounds (1)' error.

Simply go to the control panel, and look for the sound/speaker/audio device option, then the sound and audio devices, click on the audio tab and make sure the 'sound playback' and 'sound recording' default devices are that of the laptop/pc and not of the VoIP phone.

Hopefully that should solve the problem.
