I had this problem and started doing every hack that I could find on the internet. I have a neighbor across the hall whose Magicjack worked fine, and so I plugged my Magicjack into his computer, and it worked fine. So, I knew my computer had the problem. After a month of hacks and fixes, to include reinstalling the operating system, I found something that worked! It has to do with the paging file on your computer. I partitioned my hard-drive and put the paging file on its own partition. I also installed a second hard-drive and gave the paging file a second partition to go to. After doing this, my computer runs much better and the Magicjack works like a charm. In the last 3 months of using it, I haven't had any problems. This solution also reduces the problems with fragmentation of your paging file and the overall memory.

Can be several things. All I can suggest is that you have to eliminate as many variables as possible. I had much the same problems and now my install is solid (see my setup below).

1. What type of phone are you using? I first tried a cheap wired set with a 20 foot phone cable. This caused several calling and receiving problems. Get a decent quality phone (wireless or wired) and keep the cable no longer than 6 ft.

2. What else is running on the PC? try killing everything else to see if it is a resource issue. If works, start your other things one at a time to see what the conflict is.

3. Is your internet connection working well? Get into your router if you can and check status. If you have doubts, have your ISP check it out and tell them you are doing VOIP. Web surfing is is far more forgiving the VOIP. You, of course, need a high speed link for any VOIP to work reliably.

4. Check with Magic Jack on the web to see if your unit needs a firmware upgrade. Not sure when you got yours but they have had a few issues so it may be worth a shot.

My set-up so you have a reference:

-Magic Jack at latest revision
-XP home, SP3 with 512mb of ram and running Magicjack + zonealarm firewall. (I bought a used Dell Desktop for $150.00 off eBay and it runs 24x7 for MagicJack)
-Two Vtech wireless phone sets (WalMart) hooked up with a home-made "y" cable that is 5 ft. long. Gives me 4 wireless phones. I do not use the PC with a headset so don't know about this functionality.
-DSL: 608 up speed and 3553 down, link status constant "up" and "0" errors. Also ran at lower DSL speeds without issue but link status (up) and errors (zero) are CRITICAL.
- I forwarded my Magic Jack number to my DSL required land-line. Works great and I can use my existing caller ID, answering machine and call blocking gizmos without a problem.

Hope this at least gives you a reference. I just renewed for five additional years of Magic Jack and it works as well as my land-line ever did

How do I install my magic jack usb dongle and get it to work on my MS Surface running 8.1 RT

Your Magic Jack won't work on MS Surface with RT because Magic Jack is made to run on Windows. If you had Windows Pro 8.1 then it wouldn't be a problem. What you can do is install your Magic Jack to another computer. While you are away, you can remotely connect and control that computer (assuming you leave it on) with an App called Remote Desktop. This will let you hear the sound and use your mic from your tablet to make those calls. Good Luck.

Magicjack problems

Try another telephone as the magic jack device only provides a certain level of voltage output which does not supply enough power for a dial tone and power to older telephones. There are work arounds provided within the magic jack forum blogs which can be found by visiting this website, found on google.

Fax magicjack

  1. Operating Systems
    • As of 2010, the Magic Jack works well with Windows XP and Vista machines. Windows 7 has reported problems listed on their Microsoft Answers forum.
    Do Not Support
    • According to the Magic Jack company website they "...do not officially support using faxing with Magic Jack."

    Testing the Fax
    • Test your fax machine with Magic Jack by turning off the error correction on the machine and using the slowest speed available. If successful at that speed, increase the speed and check if it continues to work.

I installed the magic jack since this time no other sound device is working except skypke and the magic jac

What it sounds like is a very rare (these days) occurance of an IRQ conflict. This is called an Interupt Request. An interrupt request is a service in the operating system which dedicates resources to devices. Obviously, Magic Jack has swiped an IRQ for itself (which is probably in conflict with your sound device). This kind of thing was very common in Windows 98, but XP and above pretty much fixed IRQ conflicts...however, they can occur if a device is a real resource hog.
There is a fix for this problem.

First of all, if you have XP, go into Accessories, System Tools, System Information.Click on the Hardware Resources. Then, Click on IRQ. Note the IRQ being used my Magic Jack and the IRQ being used by the sound device. Write down the IRQ number for each. I am betting both devices are on the same IRQ. Note, in XP, you will have IRQ 0 thru 23. Do NOT disturb IRQ's 0 thru 10! Leave these alone. Now, take note and see if there is an IRQ that is SKIPPED. Or there is an IRQ that is FREE (not being used). Write this down.

Now what you want to do, is you want to re-assign your sound device to a different IRQ. In order to do this, see this article:

http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/cha...

After resetting the IRQ's involved, reboot the computer for the changes to take effect. If the IRQ's you set do not result in a conflict resolution, try a different IRQ. It may take a couple of two or three times, before the operating system accepts your choices.

The voice of the person talking to me over Magic Jack breaks up. It is as though the sound fades in and out making it impossible to understand what the person is saying.

magic jack can be a funny beast....on my quad core 10GHz AMD box under Windows 7 or XP, it 'll break up like crazy, but I built a 1.5GHz single core P4 under XP and it works flawlessly on it...so that box does nothing but the magic jack now. Yup, got a BIG phone box under the desk...lol...
