Question about Craftsman 3 gal. Air Compressor, 1.5 hp, Horizontal k

1 Answer

Air compressor motor will not restart

I have a 30 gallon 5.5hp craftsman that starts up fine with no load but as soon as the air gets to low, the compressor will try to start but it will turn real slow causing the circuit breaker to blow. The only way to get it going again is to drain all the air out before turning it back on.

Mobile synthetic 10-30 , Craftsman compressor oil if K-mart or Sears are near by. You can also use a non-detergent 10 - 30 motor oil , I use Mobile or Craftsman in mine. I have three - one is a Campbell Hausfeld this oil is per their book - (minus the Craftsman)

the start capacitor on the motor body is weak, the motor needs this component to over come the air pressure when cycling to re-build the low air pressure, change both the start and run capacitors when doing the start because the other run capacitor is just as old and it will soon fail

I believe that the motor starter circuit on my Ingersoll Rand 2475 5 hp 80 gallon compressor is incorrect. It's a 30 amp single phase compressor

You should not be pulling over 30 amps. If you are you may have low voltage, incorrect wire size or to long of a run for wire size. I would use a hand held meter and check the amps at full load.

Went to winterize my sprinklers for the first time. Have a 12 gallon, one horse, upright Craftsman compressor. Took a long time to get to 120 pounds and as soon as I opened a zone it dropped down to 30...

if your sprinkler system is very large at all, this is normal.

The compressor will not be able to keep up with the entire system trying to flow air all at once.

Blowing out each zone at the flow you can get out of the compressor for a few minutes should be sufficent.

It's also not a bad idea if you live in a very cold area to add a little antifreeze to the system. Just be sure you can recover it when you restart the system so that you're not sprinkling antifreeze on the ground when you restart the system in the spring.

6hp, 25 gallon compressor, never cycled back on, blew the breaker. reset the breaker and soon as i flip the compressor it trys to start then blows the breaker right away.

sounds like its the motor drawing too much current, has it got plenty or oil cause they run low and seize up,not the most reliable can be fine but equally can be dramas especially if its from China

Have 12 gallon / 1HP Craftsman compressor, accidentally ran it while it was low on oil....about half way low. It shut itself off. Then, I added oil and it started up. But now it builds pressure VERY slowly...

Not the motor, but probably the compressor shot. Heat from friction (due to running without oil) probably scored the cylinder walls, which allows air to escape past the piston and rings, making the compressor VERY inefficient. Some compressors have replaceable cylinders... Not sure if the very small ones do or not.

I have a electric air compressor craftsman 3.5hp 15 gallon it wont start back up when air is low

The pressure switch controls the cut-in and cut-out points for the motor. Some switches have a differential adjustment besides the pressure adjustment. The differential controls the spread between cut-in & cut-out, (say in at 80 PSI, out at100 PSI)

Try looking for these if you didn't get a manual.

Good luck

Air Compressor shuts off

Most compressors have a check valve installed in the tank that allows air from the compressor to enter the tank and not allow back pressure to the compressor. Also there is an unloader valve at the pressure switch that activates when the pressure switch cuts out releasing the pressure in the line. These two devices allow the compressor to start in an unloaded condition so that the motor will not strain. When you place you finger on the intake, the compressor is no longer pumping air thus there is not load on the motor. Your problem may be the intank check valve or the capacitor may be weak or bad. Simple check for both. Many volt meters have capacitor check and amp draw. The capacitor should not be more than 10 percent or rating. enjoy
