Question about Sony Handycam DCR-DVD108 DVD Camcorder

Camera wants to (re)format disc w/data on it; I can't lose data

Sony Handycam DVD108. Important video on this disc and all the sudden I can't add more video or fix it on the disc. I don't think it was full. No ability to view playlist, only option is to (re)format the disc which I assume means I will lose all the data on it. Took disc out, put new one in, formatted it and it takes videos fine. Put unfixed one back in and same menu--"Do you want to format as video or VR?" No other options. Please HELP! Is there another way to fix the data or get the data out?

Hi robmcd27, Thanks for responding to my note. The disc is not finalized yet, that is the problem. I want to finalize it but the camera won't let me get to the finalize menu. My only option is to reformat and that will mean I lose anything on that disc (which of course I need one piece of footage on it!) Sony will try to recover the data for me for a price, but I wondered if anyone had ever used a product called CDRoller with's cheaper than the Sony option, but would like to be sure it actually will work in this case...

Hi there. With only the information you gave me, I would have to say that the disk is what we call "finalized". Once a disk is finalized, you cannot record anything else on it. My that if you tried to re-format this disk, it would not let you do it...because it's finalized. Don't bother, just get yourself a new disk.

Thanks for using FixYa, and if you have anymore questions, leave me a comment. If not, don't forget to rate my solution a fixya!

That CDRoller seems like a good product. I googled it and found alot of info on it. It is freeware, so I don't see how you can go wrong.

As far as your problem is concerned, can you put the disk in a pc and see anything on it?

    Hi Wabbit,

Did you try CDRoller yet. It might work for you. Besides, it's freeware, If you don't like it, just uninstall it.

I get a message on the screen that says, "recording disabled." How do I fix this? I have a Sony Handycam DVD/RW Wide LCD

This message appears when mini dvd disc got some error in recording tracks, if its rewritable mini disc then format it as option is available in camera settings menu and if disc is once writable then use another disc as it can not be formatted.
Caution: Format will erase/ delete all files on dvd disc and refresh the dvd disc.

Handycam DCR-DVD108 DVD Camcorder: if I get a request to format disc upon re-insertio...

Well this was mostly the main reason the pro film makes like myself decided never to go towards DVD (disk) movie cameras and always stay with tapes like the digital 8 sort.
With disk cameras you are never ever going to be sure you are catching anything, as the disk will spin happy in the camera, but as 1000's have already found your disk will be bland if you put the disk back in the camera next time.
Did you format your disk at start of first use? sore are pre-formated, lots are not and wont record unless they are.
Good luck my friend hope you get it sorted out ok?

Sony DCR DVD108 not finalizing disc, lost data

I noticed that too with my "VR" (and NOT "Video") formatted disks. I don't think you can finalize the VR ones. Instead you have to use the Sony Import tool to grab the videos. If you are like me you probably remember using the import tool with Video formatted disks BEFORE finalizing them and it takes forever to copy them. They must be finalized to view on other devices, copy using the import tool quicker, etc., but VR formatted disks seem optimized for importing (and can be edited on the camcorder directly.

Editing a film

VOB format is MPEG-2 system stream and Media Player will play it. It may be required Codecs.
Sony DVD Cameras write data in vob format.
I would suggest to download Cole2K media Codec Pack in your PC, its free.
