Re: Oven Front Glass

Just find the screws around the oven door and start taking them out until the door comes apart. Remember how it comes apart and put it back together the same way.

You will need to find the model number to get a manual. provides a search box for looking up the manuals. For GE ranges, the model number could be in several places: on the frame behind the warming or storage drawer or kickplate, on the left leg behind the warming or storage drawer or kickplate, on the frame of the oven behind the door, under the left front surface burner, or under the lift-up cook-top at the center or on the right hand side.

If you clean the oven with non-abrasive products and avoid the spray on oven cleaners, you are unlikely to damage the surfaces/range even without the manual for your range. (Use glass cleaners for glass cook-top.) Warm water mixed with a mild detergent is useful for most spills. Avoid cleaning the seal around the oven door; damaging the seal may cause major problems.

I hope this helps.

Replacing outer glass of oven door

This is glass because glass does not burn, does not melt at oven temperatures, and is a pretty good insulator. Also allows the cook to watch the cake rise.

I would not replace with anything but factor glass. Too dangerous, even regular glass is not properly treated to be safe in this environment.

The cash for clunkers gets extended to appliances soon, perhaps this makes a new one more affordable?

Inside oven door glass broken Can I replace broken inner oven glass myself? I broke it today and need some help.

I would guess that you could not. It is a safety glass and has a special gasket material. Although you may be able to buy the door as cheap or cheaper than just the glass plus the install. Hope this helps. Have a great day.

GE Spectra model JBP78COB1CC

ok Jim - to answer your first question, you can still use the oven but it will be less efficient and will probably not operate at the temperature you set it at.

Yes you can replace the glass yourself. ?You will need the right glass for your model of stove and the installation kit to go with it.

You can purchase these at a website such as

Exploding Door

the old exploding door ploy...
01:00 hrs while sipping on a very fine IPA watch a bit of tellie the sound of glass shattering startles me from the kitchen. preparing to find the daughter's cat, still in the house after evaded bed time radar, on the counter. instead the front glass on the our GE Profile gas range, model JGB908SEK1SS, is slowly spider webbing into pieces. i grabbed the video camera and captured the event. GE sent out a repair guy to quote me a whopping $304.27 to replace their faulty part. foot note here...the range is four yrs old and hadn't been used in more than 24 hrs prior to the glass on the door shattering. i don't believe the glass had a "fracture to it in the production cycle at the factory". being a DIY guy the service tech ordered the replacement part for me. i just received the replacement glass from GE and it's white which would be OK if we hadn't ordered it in stainless steal. did i mention it's taken 2 months to get the replacement glass. i've attached a photo of the cleaned door awaiting installation. i really wish it had been the cat...77f7f82.jpg

Exploding glass door should call the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Second, go here:

Get your manual above and get the section on removing the door. Lay the door on a padded surface so that the outside is facing down. Then, find the appropriate screws and carefully remove them. You may want to take a few digital pictures. It should all come apart and then reassemble. Avoid touching insulation or breathing any dust from it. Caution when cleaning oven glass: use only blue cleaner and mild abrasive pads to remove burned on stuff. Never install any glass that is chipped or scratched.
