Question about Connex 3300 240-Channels Base CB Radio

1 Answer

Power outage The power goes out. Had a repair shop look at it and fix 2 cold solders. It worked great for 3 days and then the same problem again. I tried another power cord but it was not big enough and just kept blowing the fuse

This radio takes a 7 amp fuse in the fuse holder if it blows the fuse the most likely the radio has blown the protection diode at the power plug on the positive side this usually happens when the radio is hooked up backwards.

I have a Connex 3300 hp. It wont transmit and wont receive. Will work then just stops all of a sudden. Have taken it to cb shop repeatedly with no luck. Works for a bit then stops again. What could it be?

It sounds like an cold solder joint if the radio has set unused for a period it could be a electrolytic capacitor. After this condition reappears preferably on the bench remove the solder side cover an gently press on the pcb board with a no conductive objected a pencil with the eraser contacting the board a low light area might reveal a spark if your luck.
Remove power from radio and turn volume know on then off. If you are handy with a soldering iron i would use silver rosin core solder and a 35 watt max soldering iron and solder ******. Now with care tighted the pcb board screws and retouch the solder in the crystal area look around the board for corrision or dull colored solder this can but does no always indicate a cold solder joint. Just a tip dont just remelt solder add a little the rosin flux allows the solder to flow. As temped as you may be do not resolder the long ic chips they are very easily damaged by heat. Good Luck an i hope this was of help.

Hi

It sounds like your circuit board may have a bad solder joint. Sometimes during manufacture of the ciruit board, the joint could not be perfectly made. This will limit conduction and create heat which will worsen the effect over time. If you are familiar with opening and working with electronics then I suggest you remove the circuit board and inspect it for cold solder joints. When you find one, you can use a Cigar Torch type lighter to help reflow the solder easily. Out side of that, you mayu want to send it to a Electronics repair shop to do this for you. Let me know more and I will help. Good luck

The recieve is great, transmit was great also, now its not getting out at all. im using a "hg m84w" cobra mike and some work was done at a local shop. whats the best way to work out the componant...

I noticed finals are mosfet they will take alot of punishment from a bad antenna system match "high SWRs If the meter is moving at all on keyup i would not suspect finals. Finals seldom degrade in power they just quit. The driver for the Final transistor another transistor can produce low transmit power with a failed Final.

You say it is in a Dumptruck lots of vibration and dust. It could be cold solder joints..cracks in solder and corrsion in cracks reducing voltage to components. Dust or dirt in trimmer pots which are varible resistors.

Open case on solder side (top of radio)and tighten phillips head screws dont over tighten these boards can be fragile. After opening that side you will understand the dust issue.

I suggest checking the easy stuff first.

1. check power leads
2. Swap mic.
3. check coax connections.
4. check coax for damage.
5. swap antenna they can have broken wires.
6. make sure the plastic insulator on top that antenna is inserted in is on top and coax side is contacting antenna mount for ground.

I have a galaxy 66. Sometimes when iI turn it on, It works fine. Them I will look at the frquency counter and it shows 24.340 and keeps changing. Does it intermittinly and I have had it looked at. At...

I would suspect cold solder joint at frequency Crystal or around L26 freq tx alignment point. Cold solder joints are basicly breaks in the solder or the 2 surfaces that were being solder were no equally heated when solder was applied. These tiny crack can expand with heat or develope corrosion that becomes an insulator. I suggest that you remelt the solder adding a rosin core silver solder in this area on trace side or have it done if you are not comfortable with soldering.

A good test is to remove speaker/component cover removed with radio upside down. Power up radio, antenna connected, mic gain down, key mic then lightly press down on the crystals there are 3 marked as X1 X2 and X4. Watch for devation on frequency counter.

It is unlikely that you have a bad crystal. I suspected voltage is dropped in this area it could be a capacitor. Since you mentioned Base i assume it is not mobile less likely it is cold solder joint.

Whatever the problem i suggest you go thru replacing capacitor it could make it much more stable.

What type of power source is it hooked to? straight to car battery or some other power source? Sometimes cart alternator noise is picked up by radios. Try hooking the power source up differently

SOUNDS LIKE A COLD SOLDER JOINT OR A BAD COMPONENT WHEN IT WARMS UP THATS WHEN IT STARTS ..TAKE OFF THE COVER SO THAT YOU CAN SEE THE SOLDER SIDE OF THE BOARD PUT POWER TO THE RADIO AND WHEN IT WARMS UP AND SHUTS DOWN TAKE A LITTLE PIECE OF WOOD OR PLASTIC AND PROBE ALL THE SOLDER CONNECTIONS TO CHECK FOR A COLD SOLDER JOINT IT MAY BE GRAY IN COLOR MAY NOT.. SEE IF IT GOES ON AND OFF.. IF SO RESOLDER THAT SOLDER JOINT.......IF THIS DOES NOT WORK ....PICK UP SOME FREEZE SPRAY AND SPRAY IT ON THE COMPONENT'S ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BOARD THIS IS WHAT A SERVICE PLACE WILL DO IF THAT DOES NOT WORK NOW BRING IT TO A SERVICE AND LET THEM SCRATCH THERE HEAD GOOD LUCK

Transmit cuting out

sounds like the finals are tore up, maybe 1 of the dual finals is working and the high power side is out. You said it puts out just 2 watts and that is what it would put out on low side. Do you especially break-up after it warms up a little. If it works better cold and when it warms up then your finals might be shot.
