Epson R320 "General Error" message - unable to clear

Situation: Wife pulled a crookedly-loading piece of paper out of the machine. She reported a grinding sound followed by the "General Error" message on the control panel and the maintenance (ink) light illuminated.
When I got to the machine the printer head was locked in a far right position. I have been on message boards all morning and have eliminated ink drainage as an issue.
I opened the cover and, using a small screwdriver, pushed against the white tab/dowel behind the print head to release it, and moved it to the left. Visual inspection confirmed no paper jam or bits of paper in the visible paper path.
Next, I powered off the printer. Then, pressing the "Stop" and "Power" buttons for 7 seconds, the print head began moving back and forth across the white tab several times before stopping at the end of its initial charging cycle. I repeated this process several times with the same result..the print head stopped at the right of the carriage, the maintenance light on and error message repeated.
On my fourth attempt, the "General Error" message cleared and the printer appeared ready to print. I loaded paper and attempted to print only to receive a paper loading error. I confirmed that paper was loaded correctly and attempted to print again. This time a grinding sound occurred and the print head locked on the right side of the carriage again.
Done all I know how to do. Any suggestions? Thanks,Clint

If you are getting a 'carriage jam' error as soon as you turn on your Epson printer with no tasks in progress, then check for any piece of paper stuck in the carriage. Remove the paper carefully. If the paper tears, part of it might remain inside the paper path and damage the product.

Fix 'Carriage Jam' : Open Door, clear carriage jam,
and then press OK to continue' error message
Turn off the printer and open it to see where the paper is stuck.
Manually move the carriage toward the opposite side.
Check the paper path and remove any piece of paper or any other object that is stuck in the path.
Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.

If paper is jammed, a Paper jam message will appear on the control panel display.

Follow these steps to clear the jam:

  1. Gently pull any jammed paper out of the output tray or sheet feeder.

  2. If the paper is stuck inside, turn off the Epson Stylus CX.

  3. Open the scanner, remove the jammed paper and torn pieces, close the scanner, and turn the Epson Stylus CX back on.

alert_note.gif Note: Be sure to check the far left of the carriage area when checking for jammed paper. Paper that is jammed there may be hidden from view.
If paper jams inside the Automatic Document Feeder, clear the jam as follows:

  1. Open the Automatic Document Feeder cover and remove any jammed paper.

  2. If necessary, lift the document cover and remove any paper that has jammed inside.

General Error Message

The "General error" message on the Epson R320 (as with most other Epson inkjets) can mean a whole host of things.

The most common ones are:

  • Printhead carriage blocked
(something is blocking the printhead from moving left and/or right properly)
  • Cleaning/Parking pad area blocked
(the printhead can't reach it's normal resting position)

  • Disconnected sensor
(a ribbon cable has become disconnected or a sensor has failed so the printhead or paper location is not detectable)

  • Cartridge chip sensor issue
(one or more of the cartridges has not been installed properly, has a "bad" chip or the sensor wires in the printhead carriage [where the cartridges sit] have been damaged)

If you can provide a bit more information on the error, possibly from the status monitor software that might give a bit more of a clue but hopefully the points above will give you a few places to look for possible causes.

General error on my epson stylus photo r320-

Normal 0 Driver could be corrupt.
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud

Unable to clean message

When trying to use your Brother machine you get the message "Unable to _____". The blank may be the word Change, Print, Scan or Clean and these words may vary from model to model.
This message is a general message and will appear for different reasons. It often indicates a paper jam or a mechanical issue. Complete the following to determine the possible issue.

1.
Check for foreign objects, such as a clip or ripped paper, inside the machine.
Open the scanner cover by pulling up on the lower right corner of the cover. Look inside the machine and remove any foreign objects. If you see jammed paper or another item inside this area, gently pull it out and then close the scanner cover securely.

2. If the error continues to appear, the machine may have a mechanical problem.
If the error message continues to appear, the machine will need to be reset. Resetting the machine will erase all faxes in memory and the Fax Journal Report. However, there is a way to transfer faxes in memory and the Fax Journal Report to another fax machine to print them out. Do the following to transfer the data and reset the machine...

Thanks.

Epson R320 carriage jammed

The ink cartridge is probably not inserted correctly.  Unplug the printer and manually move the carriage to a location where you can take the ink cartridge out.

Remove it and reinsert it, making sure that it is fully located, before applying the power.

Make sure that there is nothing blocking the carriage movement, such as some remnant of paper.
