Question about IBM ThinkPad A31P Notebook
This could be a board issue, backlight issue or inverter issue. Look at the screen closely, if there is a faint image it's either a backlight issue or inverter issue, you can just order on inverter, they're 20 bucks on ebay, if that doesn't work replace the backlight. As much as I would like to be able to tell you a quickfix that will solve the problem you can either google for guides that show you how to replace the backlight or bring it in for repairs. Backlight repairs are somewhat difficult. If there is no image at all it's most likely a logic board issue which will cost 50% of buying a new one. Laptop Repair NYC.

Unfortuantely at this point, replacing the LCD or replacing the laptop will be your choices. Try ebay for parts to your laptop if you want to attempt replacement of the LCD. You may get lucky and find a dead laptop that is the same model as yours where the LCD still works; otherwise, replace the laptop. If you send it back to Lenovo (the company who deals with IBM's laptops now) it will cost you about as much as buying a new one to fix this one.

SOURCE: Blank LCD Screen
Well, sounds like a couple of things if an external monitor works. First, toggle a couple of times between lcd and external just to make sure that it's not set to external only.
If that's no help, look closely at the lcd while the operating system is running. Can you see any image at all? If so (or if not) you have a bad inverter (we have them at the shop for around 25.00). The other possibilities are a bad backlight (which means a new lcd, about 75.00) or it's possible the lcd cable has simply came loose from it's socket.
That's about all it could be on these models if you're getting an external image. I'm using a T30 right now. They tend to have bad memory slots, but great machines.

SOURCE: Dim Laptop screen
It could either be your power settings dimming it (battery saver mode), or more likely when you replaced the screen, you replaced the backlight with the one that came with it. The replacement backlight is probably not as good as the one you had. You can try putting your other backlight in it (the backlight is that circuit board near the hinge that you plug in when you switch the screens out). Since it's going in and out, I'd check the power settings first though.
